Hi Ali - I've had a look at the England 1841 census for David Wilson born in Scotland - although there are a fair few, nothing appropriate jumps out I'm afraid. :?

Best wishes

Hi Pinkshoes,
I've had a look at the England 1841 census for David Wilson born in Scotland - although there are a fair few, nothing appropriate jumps out I'm afraid.
Thank you so much for having a look anyway. Could you please have a look for James Wilson born about 1837/38 England?

Thank you
Ali :)

Hi Ali - unfortunately there are so many James Wilsons it's impossible to narrow them down without a rough idea of either where in England he was born or where he might be at the time of the census. There are literally hundreds of them in that two year period, and it's a case of opening each page, looking to see the family members then either viewing the whole image or going back to the next one. Don't know how you'd get any more clues

If you do get any more info, please let me know and I'll try again for you.

Best wishes

If some kind soul has access to Ancestry.com, I believe they now have the 1841 census online. The index is "Fat" which means you can search on a great many more fields.

It should be possible to find a 2 - 5 year old James Wilson with a Scottish born brother, David aboutt 14. Hopefully they were still in England at the time and both parents were alive. This should narrow down the place of birth too.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

HI
there is a 15 year old David Wilson with parents (?) Joseph 62, and Jane 55 in Luton Bedfordshire with no other children but nothing else that looks as though it may fit.
Cheers
Fiona

Hi all

Andy I've been searching the 1841 on Ancestry for these brothers but I can't see any way of pinning them down together in the search that doesn't involve looking at each record - there are hundreds of them. The search fields allow name, age, census place, birthplace etc and "key word, eg foreign parts" - do you know of a fancy mechanism that would narrow it down, as you suggest. Nelmit kindly supplied some info that could help pin them down in the Liverpool area and I've not exhausted that line of enquiry yet.

These elusive brothers are beginning to get on my nerves too, and I'm as keen as Ali to find them    No stone will be left unturned!!!

Best wishes

Try Birthplace "S" or Birthplace Scot or Scotland for David Wilson born 3 years either side of 1827 and James Wilson born 2 years either side of 1837 and compare County and Towns and frame or GRO codes.

Wouldn't think there are a great many Scottish David Wilson's born between 1825 and 1830ish.

That's right Andy - in fact there are only 19 David Wilson's listed birthplace Scotland in the whole census index. That was where I started and said none of them look likely.

Then I turned to James, but with no county to go on, there's no other way of narrowing it down. (I thought you had a secret method  )

I've also looked at the index for every Wilson born Scotland, in case he was listed as D Wilson or some fancy spelling of David (there is a Daivd but he's not ours). Past experience shows that Ancestry indexing contains one or two errors :D

Then I tried Wislon, just in case, but only found Dinah. Also tried Wson, Wikson and Wlsn - there's a fair few suggestions there but none for us.

Also looked now at all the Lancashire David and James Wilsons just in case, but no joy.

I'm kinda stumped really. Either he's no' there, or gie weel hidden.

If anyone's got any ideas I'll be delighted to check them out.

Best wishes

Quite costly, but if they're not obvious in England then 1841 in Scotland is your ONLY other resource. It may take nearly £20 to view all 11 to 15 year old David Wilsons but, hopefully, one will have a wee brother, James, with the all important "E" in place of birth.

Not only Ancestry has indexing problems, loads of McCurdys are indexed as McCardy in the 1861 census on Scotland's people and only two days ago I was looking for a Sm?th. One of the Smiths turned out to be USHER (very clearly written) anyone looking for these Ushers wouldn't have a hope of finding them.

The index will be changed in due course.
