Without reading any other replies, I think it says sailor, because the S is the same for the word scholar. Also another occuparion there is teacher, and the T is diferent.

I too think it says Sailor......the s is similar in the word scholar, and also the T on the surname Thomson listed is less flowery!
searching for Jacks, Williamsons, Maxwells, Wardlaws, Hardies, Bennies, Kays, Bruce, Sneddon, Dougall and Galloway all mainly Polmont and Muiravonside areas - basically all families from Polmont!!

If it's of any interest, Alexander Wilson (below Miss McNab the Teacher) was a Tailor in 1851.

Well that kinda sorts it out then, well done Jack - it must be Tailor, because Alexander Wilson's occupation looks very similar in the forming of the letters to that of young John....
