Thanks anyway Annie and Tracey.
Jean,
Really most of Glasgow as a lot of my bunch did a bit of moving around in the city, but Barony, Milton, Govan come to mind. Also, Roseneath in Dumbarton and a fair bit of Ayr.
Kilmartin and Kilbrandon, in Argyll would be purely speculative as, by 1881, my direct ancestors from Luing had already moved to Glasgow. However, I'm hoping to find out if their siblings remained there as previous generations seem to have been there for a very long time.
I know I can get the ones from SP, but I'd love to see the real pages and see who was living nearby.

Hi All,
I think there are probably many more errors in the 1881 index from LDS than reported. My MARTIN family are indexed as NORTON and I found them by searching by christian name ELLEN and the place of birth, Cheshunt , Hertford (fortunately they were correct) and found the whole family in the anticipated area of Waltham Abbey.
Regards, Fiona

Hi Mary
What about ordering the relevant reels from your local LDS centre? (for a small fee - about £3 I think, if they don't already have the one(s) you want, but much cheaper than ordereing individual pages from SP!)
You can look through the whole area then, not just the one page. I've certainly found it well worthwhile as I have come across some connections I would not have known about otherwise. Gives you a good "feel" for the area too - frequent names, occupations etc.
Best wishes
Lesley

Fiona, that second link that David gave in his post is very interesting in that respect. Seems that some geographical gaffs were made too. It has certainly made me more aware that I need to be even more open in my criteria when searching the 1881 index.
Lesley, Yes I really must visit my local centre. I understand from my son-in-law's brother (who is doing their family) that they are a very nice helpful bunch over there, so I'll get something organised.
By the way: He is hugely impressed with SP. I showed him the site and what can be found there and he went really green with envy.

LDS 1881 census CDs
Hi Mary,
The 1881 LDS British census CDs (two of which cover all of Scotland) are very, very useful.
The full set costs £29.95 in the UK, and even with errors, i reckon it was the best £30 i've ever spent!
If you've not yet got it, then maybe start hinting what you'd like for Xmas....
It has a feature to show Neighbours, and is a lot more flexible to search than what's online.
You can even search by, say, forename only, or even an age without a name, or where born or now living etc.
There's very little you can't do with it - the Advanced Section lets you look for any word (or a combination of words).
It's been mentioned a few times on TS - maybe try the "Search" Tab at the top of the page to find the posts.
I know it doesn't have the original pages,
but it would help narrow down which films you'd need to order in at a Family History Centre.
Jack,
who is more than content with the LDS 1881 CDs - delighted comes to mind

Jack, I had been planning on buying them, but I've had a lot of problems with LDS over one of my Vital Records CD's not working. They did send me out another set, but the very same problem exists with the very same CD. It's not my PC, as the same problem happens on my laptop and on my daughter's PC.
Since informing them that the replacement set is still faulty, I've had no help at all. That kinda put me off spending any more money with them.

That's right, Ttracey, I did post about it, and still haven't had any more help from them.
