I see what you mean Stewie but are you sure the first letter isn't J? It looks very like the other Js in the list. It looks as if the name has been altered, the census-taker having written is wrongly in the first place. I'm not convinced it is'nt James but am still pursuing the original.

Hi Muriel

I had another look and play around with the image this morning before I logged on to site.

I sharpened the image to the maximum without distortion and also magnified it to its max potential. Which was 150% of the original, any more and it was unreadable. The image also does not like being placed in the negative :shock:

After sharpening and saving I still come to the conclusion that it is Allan with a gap then ?M. The first letter looks like an A, there is an x above his name but there doesnt appear to be any correction to his name. Perhaps this x was a count marker?

Of course I may be incorrect in my reading of the name, and I would never presume to be correct, there are better readers of old script around than me.
