The children of William Matchett (various spellings) and Margaret/Peggy Matheson seem to be the lot shown in the 1861 census page. The bonus should be Joseph in 1855.

The IGI gives the following children to this couple in their various spellings.

MARGARET MATCHETT - Christening: 15 JAN 1843 Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland
WILLIAM MATCHET - Christening: 14 DEC 1845 Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland
ARCHIBALD MARSHALL - Christening: 01 FEB 1848 Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland
WILLIAM MATTCHAT - Christening: 27 AUG 1850 Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland
JAMES MITCHELL - Christening: 21 AUG 1854 Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland
JOSEPH MATCHETT - Birth: 01 OCT 1855 Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland
MALCOLM MATCHAT - Birth: 18 MAY 1859 Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland

Wow, thanks all for straining your eyes on this one! It seems unlikely to me that it's Wishart, Argyle doesn't really seem to have been a Wishart stamping ground, and there isn't anyone listed in 1841. Could it be Mitchel? I notice that the IGI has a swathe of Mitchel's born in Campbeltown about this period, a few of which are Archibalds.

If we are all agreed that it's not Wishart, should I point this out to SP?

Thanks again,

Scott

Hi Scott,

I take it Margaret Matchett's OPR entry is also unclear. The IGI shows William Matchett or Mitchell as the father, and Margaret McMath as the mother.

Add older daughter with yet another variation of the surname.

CATHARINE MALCHAT - Christening: 17 MAR 1840 Campbeltown, Argyll, Scotland

All the best,

It's defintutely MATCHETT in the 1855 birth register entry, and the father's place of birth is interesting :!:

There should be 6 kids before Joseph.........

And I wouldn't bet on it not being spelt sometimes as MATCHEL[L] given what various surname books say!
