Hi, Rita and Dennis,
I am looking for a Scotland connection for members of my family, James and John Skirving. They were brothers and came to the United States with their mother just prior to the Civil War. James married Mary Jane Nicholson and their daughter Margaret Jane Skirving was my great grandmother. My grandmother thought they came from the Highlands but further research indicates they probably came from Haddington. Do you think there may be some connection to the people you have found?

Hi Karen,
Welcome to Talking Scot! I'm sure you'll hear from Rita and Dennis soon, since although their posts in this topic are 5 years old now, they both still visit the site. It would be great if you could find a connection!
All the best,
Sarah

Hi everyone,
It has been almost a year since I posted my first post regarding John and James Skirving. I am heading to Haddington, Scotland next month and hope to find out more about the Skirvings prior to their immigrating to the U.S. just prior to the Civil War. John served in the Union Army and James, who was too young to be a soldier, was a drummer boy. James was captured and sent to Libby prison until he escaped with a number of other Union soldiers. If anyone has any information that might help me find ancestors in Haddington, please let me know.

Hello Karen,
Sorry you have had no response to your post. Rita has not been on Talking Scot since you posted it, but Dennis is a regular visitor-- he must have missed it. I suggest you try to send a pm to Dennis, as that should give him an email alert.
Do you have an approximate birth date for John and James? What was their mother's name?
All the best,
Sarah
