Now I'm well and truly confused. In 1871 there is this family in Urr in Dalbeattie.

William Hill Head Head Widower 42 Granite Polisher Ireland
Helen Hill Daur Unm Scholar 14 Urr
Margaret Hill Daur Unm 11 Scholar Urr
William Hill Son Unm 9 Scholar Urr
Martha Hill Daur 5 Scholar Urr

Helen/Elenor's age is a bit out but otherwise it fits well with the 1861 census.

It also fits with Martha dying in Urr in April 1868 along with her newly born child who does not have a name. My reading of John Hill and Margaret Jardine's MC in 1870 was that his mother's maiden name was Murray and that is the name of the wife of this William.

Hi again

I also think that your William remarries in Dalbeattie in 1872 and has more children by then 1881 census with his new wife. In fact I think he takes on one of hers as his!

Anne

I will also put my hands up to being unable to find the death of William and his new wife Mary.

I had a major problem with this to start with as Martha died aged 2½ 24th Aug 1865, and this Martha was born 03Jul1865, - even although the parents are the same, - William HILL and Martha HILL MS MURRAY, - except that I then saw that she was originally registered as Marjory, with an RCE entry re the name change to Martha, the sequence of events being obvious !, - the date of marriage on the birth being shown as 06Aug1850 in Dumfries, compared to that on the unnamed child's birth in 1868 as 2?Jun1852 in Dumfries, - symptomatic of an irregular marriage?

If this is the same man, - and it looks reasonable, - then you have
his parents from the re-marriage.

Here's the family in 1881, -

Sunnyside
Census Place: Urr, Kircudbright, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0224056 GRO Ref Volume 864 EnumDist 2 Page 29
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
William HILL M 54 M Tyrone, Ireland
Rel: Head
Occ: Granite Polisher
Mary FARREL M 45 F Kings County, Ireland
Rel: Wife
Mary HILL 13 F Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
Rel: Dau
Occ: Scholar
Catherine HILL 7 F Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
Rel: Dau
Occ: Scholar
John BRADLY U 48 M Belfast, Ireland
Rel: Boarder
Occ: Gen Lab

...which gives his county of birth in Ireland !

Catherine is a child of the second marriage; while Mary is Mary's child from her first marriage to Daniel BLAINEY, who has obviously taken William's name.

No sign of the family in 1891; nor of deaths of William or Mary, - my money would be on their having returned to Ireland, or emigrated .........

A possible, very neat example of how a second marriage can "come to the rescue" in terms of parents' names.
