Hello Jack

On Murdoch's death cert his parents are down as William Muir and Elizabeth McCutchie. On previous searches I did a soundex and found a birth for the youngest child and 2 marriages for the same day in Sorn and Kilmarnock for William Mair and Elizabeth McClatchie. Going by what you have just I have found I would think that I have the parents and the birth of Elizabeth born 1840.

Hi Heather,
It certainly seems a good possibility at the moment - ie McCUTCHIE for McCLATCHIE.
And Murdoch's got plenty of siblings for you to look at as well.
Hopefully any of their MCs or DCs will have the same (or very similar) mother's surname.
I'll be thinking these below you'll have got long ago!

MARY MAIR - Birth: 24 JUN 1823 Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland
Parents: WILLIAM MAIR & ELIZABETH MCCLATCHIE

JANET MAIR - Birth: 03 JUN 1827 Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland
Parents: WILLIAM MAIR & ELIZABETH MCLATCHIE

JEAN MAIR - Birth: 16 DEC 1830 Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland
Parents: WILLIAM MAIR & ELIZABETH MCLATCHIE

ANDREW MCCLATCHIE MAIR - Birth: 03 FEB 1838; Christening: 05 MAR 1838 Ayr, Ayr, Scotland
Parents: WILLIAM MAIR & ELIZABETH MCCLATCHIE

:D Hello Jack :D

You've gone and done it again :D I did not have those births. THANK YOU so much for that I did a search on SP last night and put the parents first names in got hits for all except Murdoch and Andrew. I used the surname Mair or Muir using the soundex. I now have that saved and will print it off.

You have made an Angel very happy

Hello Jack

I've just been on SP and did the searches formy Mair/s and have been told that there are no matches. Why would this be if they are there?

Mair - OPRs / Censuses

Post by Jack » Fri May 19, 2006 11:05 pm

Hi Heather,
Haven't a clue! Unless they are indexed under slightly different spellings?
All four are as OPR Extracts (not submissions) in the IGI - so you'd expect them to be on SP.
Maybe ask SP through a Contact Form why they aren't showing up?
Andrew in the IGI is actually as this below -
Forename as McClatchie, but i'd presume that it's meant to be Andrew's middle name?

MCCLATCHIE ANDREW MAIR - Birth: 03 FEB 1838; Christening: 05 MAR 1838 Ayr, Ayr, Scotland
Parents: WILLIAM MAIR & ELIZABETH MCCLATCHIE

Jack
ps, or was it the censuses you were trying to get?
It was fairly clear as MAIRS in 1851 - 578 (493) Ed 3 p 5,
and as MAIR in 1861 - 578 Ed 6 p 5.
Again, a Contact Form might be in order!

Hi Heather,
Was it no matches in that you can't even find them in the indexes? Or that there are no images available?
If the former then i do think you need to contact them.
If the latter then i believe GROS / SP had some imaging problems with some Enumeration Books?
(this was discussed not too long ago here on TS)

Hello Jack

I managed today to get the 1861 census and found another child the problem was that there was no matches. Still can't get 1851 and 1871 as William was still alive then. Got Williams death cert and so I now have his parents. Andrew is a middle name found him on SP as McClatchie Andrew Mair also found Mary, Janet and Jean on SP the dates all match. Murdoch I still can't find even putting in the surname which now seems to be Mair and not Muir.

Hi Heather,
Glad you've now got William on the 1861 at least.
But what is the "found another child no matches" problem? Sorry, i'm not understanding this....

The 1851 number of 578 (493) Ed 3 p 5 will be slightly different on SP as they are using their own numbering system for 1851.
But there should only be one William MAIRS age 50 in Ayr 1851.
Maybe SP has him as MAIR (the "s" on the end of MAIR was just a wee squiggle and made it look like MAIRS)

And i can't see Murdoch's birth either, under any similar name to Mair - maybe he was, for some reason, never recorded.
(only other thing would be to scroll through the OPR film on the slim chance that he has been missed out when indexing)

Hello Jack

Sorry for the misunderstanding it was the way I tpyed everything in my excitement. I did a search on SP for Mair in the 1851 census Ayr and have on to look at the next time I am in SP.

On the 1861 census there is a son John age 10 which is an extra child to add to the growing list. I would need to get the 1871 census to see if there are any more children.

I have still to find Elizabeths death so I can get the parents and I now need to get the birth for John.

I would like to say a BIG Thank You to for all of your help it is very much appreciated and has helped me greatly to move on a little bit.
