Okay I thought you had a trick. I forget about using the IGI. Paying to view searches/images on my account-you shouldn't do that.
Good point about ignoring the Craig surname. But maybe Hunter was Mary Anne's maiden name so her son would have some other surname.
I'm waiting to hear back from the Australian lady who I am checking this for.

Hi All,
This one I have found has too many discrepancies to be right but I thought it was interesting and you never know, as I have found out. Also I thought it would be good to point out another way you can get around weird spellings of last names when using the IGI. You can also search with no fathers name at all which I use to find who daughters have married.
I did a search on :
first name JOHN last name blank
fathers name ROBERT last name blank
mothers name MARY HUNTER.
BRITISH ISLES SCOTLAND
One of the results that come up is JOHN MCGARRIE b 09 Oct 1866 High Church, Glasgow, Parents Robert McGARRIE and Mary HUNTER. This couple Married 1859 Calton Glasgow. I saw the last name and thought McWHARRIE-McQUARRIE-McGARRIE. But of course the dates are way out.

Wow Karen!!! You may be on to something here. All the right names...all the right locations....the only thing that doesn't add in is the occupation of Basketmaker. Unless we can find that this fellow changed into a ship's carpenter....hmmmmm. And look at that October birthdate for John...it's very close.
The IGI has this list of children for them and with the first one being in Ayrshire! :
1. MCGARRIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 20 SEP 1857 Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland
2. SARAH MCGARRIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 18 DEC 1868 Clyde, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
3. ROBERT MCGARRIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 09 OCT 1863 Central District, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
4. ROBERT MCGARRIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 08 JUN 1873 Clyde, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
5. ELIZABETH MCGARRIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 03 DEC 1859 Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
6. JOHN MCGARRIE - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 09 OCT 1866 High Church, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
and the 1861 census shows they were both born in Ireland and are boarders.......
Name: Robert McGarrie
Age: 25
Estimated birth year: abt 1836
Relationship: Lodger
Gender: Male
Where born: Ireland
Registration Number: 644/1
Registration district: Central District
Civil parish: Glasgow St Paul
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 65 High St
Occupation: Basket Maker
ED: 35
Household Members: Name Age
Marian Campbell 24
Elizabeth Craiy 26
John Craiy 31
Sarah Craiy 4
Elizabeth McGarrie 1
Mary McGarrie 22

Alot of food for thought here....
Best wishes

Hi dollard
Yup I think you're correct on that one. So if you have proof positive that your Robert Wharrie was in Australia in 1877 then I don't think he'd still be in Glasgow in 1881.
What an amazing set of circumstantial evidence. I don't think I've ever seen one hit the mark so closely before.
You mentioned that Robert and Mary Ann had a daughter Agnes.....but was that the end of it? I just feel there has to be a further clue in Australia somewhere....but what?....and where??
Still thinking...

Jean you had asked earlier "Is it possible there are any more clues to be gained from Australian records? Did Mary Ann and Robert use a naming pattern or middle name for one of their children? Can Mary Ann be traced to her parents and birth in Ayrshire? Did either of them ever claim to have siblings?"
I now have answers. Mary Anne and Robert only had 2 children-John and Agnes-neither had a middle name. The Australian lady has no idea if Robert and Mary Anne had siblings. It seems impossible to trace Mary Anne to her parents as it isn't certain where she was born and Hunter is too common.
In your last post you say "You mentioned that Robert and Mary Ann had a daughter Agnes.....but was that the end of it?" I'm not sure what you mean by the end of it. If you mean did Robert and Mary Anne have any more kids-no. Or if you mean did she have children-it seems she had two.

Hi Dollard,
I see your friend has the death cert of Robert. Does this have his parents names. Also Mary Anns DC. I would also search for Marion if you can't find a Mary Ann.
I haven't done very much Australian research, but one DC i have from the 1880's in Queensland lists parents names, I'm not sure if all states are the same.

Hi dollard
I have absolutely no experience with Australian records so am no help at all there...but like Karen asks....has this lady followed up on everything available? The DC's for both Robert and Mary Ann...what did they die from (any possible hereditary ailments that could be a pointer to earlier generations)....what happened to the son John.....do Robert and Mary Ann appear on census records there and what do those show? Also has she found their immigration records...was there anyone else on the ship that might have been related?
I know...truly grasping at straws....but sometimes that's the only thing left to do...
Best wishes
