Well done Sarah! That was a tough one!

I wonder where Daniel is then?

Since I have Gemmells from Irvine, I looked up the marriage at Scotland's People. The John Gemmell/Mary Coghill marriage in Irvine in 1880 belongs to my family line, father Alexander, mother Margaret Stewart. This John Gemmell is a tailor journeyman, who was living in Govan at the time of his marriage. :D

I have a lot of information, as I said, but it goes backwards, and so not much for anything after the 1901 census. :?
Part of the reason for that is that I am in Australia, but I do try to find what I can online. I did look for a pension record or an army service record for Henry and the others at Ancestry.com, but nothing came up.

Finding out 20th century things in Scotland is therefore out of my reach unless I have a living relative, which I don't for this line, or I can find someone good enough to have a look at things for me (which frequently happens at this site and thank you all if you are reading!)

I did look at NAS online but there was nothing. Library newspaper searches might turn something up, and maybe even election rolls...or poorhouse records...well you never know! Do you know if he ever married? A search at Scotland's People may tell you.

There is only one Henry Gemmell who died after the war in Scotland and he died in Glasgow in 1966 (I searched for G*m*l) ....but that entry would need to be purchased to see the details....or I believe you can go into Park CIrcus or Edinburgh and have a look there. His death registration would tell you if he had a wife.

That's all I can think of right now as it's quite late here and I am heading for bed soon...maybe someone living in Scotland will know more things you could look for, if more recent information is what you are after. However, please don't hesitate to contact me when you are ready for the pre-1901 stuff! You can use the PM feature on this site to do that if you like.

Raymond,

If you go to www.FreeBMD.org.uk you can find - hopefully - a marriage and some (7 including twins?) births for your Henry.
If this is the right Henry he married Ada Wellings. www.lancashirebmd.org.uk only gives the same detail plus the marriage was either at a register office or a non-conformist church.
When you have the reference details (Dec qtr 1921 Manchester 8d 456) you can send for the certificate.

Best wishes,
Meg
