Hi Margaret,

Where did you start with Mary? What known facts do you have about the right Mary? From these known facts we can try and help you establish if we are looking at the right Mary or not.

All the best,

AndrewP

I have William and Mary's Marriage Registration, Mary's Birth Registration, Archibald's, Jane's, Thomas's, Mary's and William jnr's Birth Registration. I also have my grandfather's siblings birth registrations and on of his sisters had Mary Maiden name in her name. I also have Mary's death registration.
Andrew i started with my Grandfather Thomas and worked my way back till I got to William ( his grandfather). I also worked on the naming patterns that were used in Scotland at the time.

Since you are sure your g g grandparents were William McArthur and Mary McGibbon then you have the right people on the census records.

Mary was born at Doune, Perthshire and not Dumfries as you thought.

Whether or not she is the one Anne pointed out is another story unless they are named on her death entry. :?

MARY MACGIBBON

01 SEP 1822 Kilmadock, Perth, Scotland

Parents:
Father: WILLIAM MACGIBBON
Family
Mother: JEAN BENNET

According to somebody at Ancestry that Mary McGibbon emigrated to Australia.

Regards,
Annette

Hi Margaret,

Assuming this is the one person, she was uncertain of her age.
  • 1851 census - Mary McGibbon; 71 Renfrew Street (visitor); 22; Warehousewoman; Stirling, Down
  • 20-Oct-1852 - marriage to William McArthur, cabinetmaker; both residing Glasgow
  • 1855 birth of son Archibald, 68 Cambridge Street; Mary born Doon, Ayrshire
  • 1861 census - Mary McArthur; 29 Kilermont Street; 36; Stirlingshire, Haime (?)
  • 1871 census - Mary McArthur; 23 Oswald Street; 47; Dunblane
  • 1873 - death of William (widow Mary McGibbon)
  • 1881 census - Mary McArthur; 498 St Vincent St; 43; Stirlingshire, Dow
  • 1891 census - Mary McArthur; 517 St Vincent St; 60; Stirlingshire, Doune
  • 1901 census - Mary McArthur; 517 St Vincent St; 60; Lodging Housekeeper; Stirling, Doune (age could be 70; been scribbled over)
  • 1906 death of Mary McArthur, ms McGibbon; 517 St Vincent St; 82
I assume the registrar in 1855 confused Doune (Perthshire, or Stirlingshire as Mary believed) with Doon (Ayrshire).

All the best,

AndrewP

She's at 517 St Vincent Street in 1891 with 2 lodgers. Ancestry has her as Mary Marther age 60, born Doune. :)

Annette

Thank you, I shall have a look. Unreal some of the typos in transcriptions.

Hi Margaret,

With Annette's info, she is to be found on SP as Mary McArthur, age 60, in Anderston district, Glasgow (now edited into my list above).

All the best,

Andrew

Andrew, Thanks for the street name of where Mary was at the time of her death. I purchased that certificate of Friday and could not read it.

Hi Margaret,

It's a pity that Mary's son did not remember his grandparents' names when registering his mother's death. Unless some other piece of strong information comes forward, that may mean that you will never know her parents' names for sure.

All the best,

AndrewP
