Bit the bullet and downloaded all 12 pages of Leith Fort's 1861 Census and guess what?

No Chissels or any name remotely similar!

Hello Anne,

There’s never a transcription error around when you need one.

In “Accounts and papers of the House of Commons”, 1865, there’s statistics on adults attending army schools. There’s an entry for “Battery, 9th Brigade, Leith Fort”. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=FyZ ... 22&f=false

In George’s papers there’s a reference to a transfer to the 9th Brigade in 1859.

Have a read of the Yelverton case in this book, from page 49. (This scandal was in all the newspapers). Page 52 has some interesting info about Battalions and Brigades etc that may help to clarify things a bit.

I saw a description of the layout of Leith Fort in Parliamentary Papers when I was scratching around yesterday. If I remember correctly it was to do with the barracks and covered a couple of pages. If you’re interested I’ll track it down tomorrow.

Good night,
Alan

Thanks very much for those links Alan -I've spent hours reading all about 'Matrimonial Disputes'.

I read and re-read the Yelverton case - it would appear that a woman could not legally have her own 'domicile' apart from her husband?

That would mean then that wherever George was, Ann was too?

I wonder if the laws would be the same in Scotland as they are in England though?

Anne

P.S. No sign of Major Yelverton at Leith in 1861 - not on any of the 12 pages!!

Hi again Anne,

I have been having a look in the National Archives to see if I can find anything. I downloaded a good conduct list but it was too early for George who got his in 1865. I think there is another one but it seems to be "letters re good conduct awards & pay". Don't really think it would be much use anyway as you already know about it.

I thought I saw something about muster rolls but can't find it again! (Just thought that if he had been attached to another "depot" his name would be there - clutching at straws again.....) Might get a chance later to go back to the site again - if I can find something to occupy our 9 year old grandson who is spending his Easter holiday with us!

I really have problems with the NA site at times - find something one day and try and go back & can't get it.

I "amused" myself by putting all the various (wrong) spellings of his name into SP and - naturally - came up with nothing. (Talk about little things & little minds!!)

Sorry to waffle on.

Christine

PS I turned up a medal card on NA for Chissel George P. 1914/1920. Your George's grandson/ggrandson?

Thank you Christine.

Like you, I have the same problem with NA - we should really keep notes!!

I came across the muster roll too, but something else caught my eye and of course off I went to have a nosey, then couldn't find my way back!

The Medal Card you found would have been his grandson, also George Penny Chissel.

Hi again Anne,

Have you had any joy with George Chissell? The reason I am asking is that when I was on FMP I put in his name and 1832 birth year. If you scroll down through the results under the heading "Worldwide Army Index" it comes up with "Chissell George - Gunner".......? Could it be??

Problem is, of course, it could be his son/grandson. No dates mentioned at all. Having said that having entered a birth year of 1832.....

I can't go any further as instead of the usual 5 credits it is 15 and I don't have that many left.

Hope I haven't sent you on a wild goose chase, but if you haven't found him - maybe, just maybe...... [-o<

Fingers crossed

Christine.

Hi Christine,

Thanks very much for remembering about George!

I took advantage of the freebie to find out that it was indeed the correct George Chissell you had seen, but all the record showed was that the Regiment was stationed at either Woolwich, Manchester, Folkestone, Portsmouth, Devonport, Leith Fort, Tower of London, Pidgeon House Fort (Dublin) or Spike Island (Cheshire?).

Here we go again .........

Hi Anne,

Glad it was the correct George at least.

I presume this means that as he is not showing up on any census that is available he must have been in Ireland - and, of course, that census was destroyed!

I did put Pidgeon House Fort, Dublin into Google - got a painting but not much more.

Our family will also cause problems for future generations. We were living in East Africa for the both the 1981 and 1991 census, although the three children were at school/nursing/uni in Scotland for the 1991 census. No doubt cause a few postings on TS. "Help I can't find my ggggrandparents....." Perhaps I should write a note now
