Hi Lesley,
Can't help much, and David's suggestion looks best.

James' occupapation is Public School Head Master.
In 1881 James was at Grafton Square. This was at the top (north) end of John St.

Hi Jack
Thanks!
Of course, I see it now. Public.

I've contacted SP, so hope a clearer copy might be forthcoming.

Best wishes
Lesley

Another bit of info.
In 1904 there were two Prince's Squares in the city.
The wan in Stathbungo and the one in Buchanan Street.
And was James Powell ever the heidie at St Rollox in the Garngad?

"I've lived on the southside now for two decades and a hauf
you can tell the way I'm talking that I've became a toff
It only goes to show that how one lives and learns
you would swear that I was born in Clarkston or in Newting Mearns"

Don't know yet. Don't know my way round Glasgow so I'm not even sure what's likely. As Jack mentioned, in 1881 he was at Grafton Square (shown below) - I don't know if that is anywhere near the school you mention? Don't know where they were in the 1891 after he married Flora Duff and won't be finidng out for a while 'cos I've spent so many credits on a whole extended family of Duffs in the past few days on SP (one thing just led to another....you know how it is... ) that I really must call a halt!!!

Greetin's Lesley
I have several PO directories for Glasgow.
They give sparse but interesting info.
On the 1893, it has James Powell as the headmaster of St Rollox.
I have four of the Glasgow PO directories on cd.

Your Strathbungo link proved to be very interesting....
The next parts of the development to be built were 11-17 Moray Place, both sides of Regent Park Square and the north side of Queen Square, which were all built in 1864-1865, and the northern-most two tenement blocks of Regent Park Terrace on Pollokshaws Road, first occupied in 1865 and 1867.
Daniel Mcnicol, 1825-1872 my 2nd gr grandfather owned property here - 2 Queen Sq. and 1 Regents Park Sq. The rents due on these properties are mentioned in his will. He was a builder ...and I now begin to wonder if he was involved in the building of these, which was something I hadn't considered before... hmm, I wonder how to follow that one up?

Oh, and thanks for the info about James Powell - another bit of interesting info to add.

Best wishes
