Hi Cat,
It does look like the same family, and that John is just an error in 1851, or that James was one in 1841!
But probably the former as Hugh gave James as his father on his MC.
Mary is as a widower in 1861; but was she? It doesn't say James was deceased on Hugh's 1863 MC.
But quite a few MCs have this missing from parents names, so very possibly true.
Other children's MCs or DCs might help, as would Mary's DC (not easy to find!). Maybe try for Mary on the 1871 census first?
But if Hugh's 1863 MC is correct, then Mary should've died 1861-1863.
I couldn't see Hugh at 76 King St in 1861. Was it CALTON? there is no Number 76 then, but that's not to say there wasn't one by 1863.
Still can't find him in Glasgow 1861, but hopefully you will now that SP has the index online.
Hannah (26) is probably with a Rankine family in Glasgow 1861.

This would look like the family of Mary GALLOCHER who died 1859 as aged 44.
These are just the basics of 1851, and part of 1861 at 59 New Vennel.
It seems that after Mary died her widower hubby James then "re-married" an Ellen GLENDINNING (probably her married name).
He's shaved about 20yrs off by 1861...! but maybe the 1851 should've said 37.

Thanks for the abundance of information Jack - yet again very helpful
. Looks like I have the wrong Mary's DC - very annoying as it's the only Mary I could find with the second name Gallocher (various spellings) and with the maiden name O'Hara. The good thing is I've been able to rule people out at least! It would be a lot easier if they had less common names. I'm off to search the 1861 census - had a look for Hugh yesterday but couldn't find him. His MC definitely said King Street, Glasgow but I don't think he would've been there in 1861 after all as yesterday I found his future wife (Marjory Findlay - another elusive person, can't find her DC either, grrr
) living in Coupar Angus with her mother, Hugh wasn't anywhere near though (why couldn't these people stay in the one place?!
). Anyway, thanks again for spending time on this and for the help, hopefully I'll get there eventually.

Hannah Gallacher 1861
Hi Cat,
This might be Hannah - though says born Paisley, and not Ireland. A bit of a mystery is brother Hugh though!

ps the James Gallocher as 57 at New Monkland in 1851 could well have been actually 38.
