1851 & 1861 Scottish Censuses on Ancestry.com today ....

Hi all, just noticed this free access on ´51 and ´61 censi, but the dreaded padlock is very prevalent, both on .co.uk, and .com, so it looks like it´s all over!.....

Unless anyone has a better way???

Hi Thrall,

Did you try going in on the link Donna posted yesterday? http://share.ancestry.com/ . I've had no problem accessing it on and off all day long. I just put my name in to start a family tree and skipped everything else and went straight into the records. Nothing is locked as far as I can see but there is a lot of strange misspellings throughout. Just wish I could find some of the one's I haven't already found on SP. Good luck!

Hi Anne, of course it worked when I went through the link........

but as Dennis Thatcher is reputed to having said, "if all else fails, read the instructions", so one tries everything else, of course. Thank you.

A quick look, having navigated past the tree nonsense proved no revelations, but amazing spellings! How can people disappear for a few decades? Not to worry, I have apparently another two days of free searching and lack of sleep!

I've been down your way many a time, digging in the Missouri courthouses for traces of my great grandmother-- a beautiful state and very friendly people. You should feel at home on Talking Scot!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes! I've been lurking for awhile here - everyone is so helpful and it's fun to read all the success stories.

My grandmother lived in Glasgow until she was 25, so I've always been interested in learning more about my Scottish roots. I've been able to find 7 new pairs of gg...grandparents, and gone back 2 more generations. Still can't find my great grandmother's birth record - I'll have to post something over in the Scottish People forum.

Well thanks to Ancestry I am tracing some branches in a much less expensive manner thah before - I love the flexibility of the interface , even if the transcriptions are a bit wobbly . Speaking of which, I wonder what sort of Grocer (or not ?) the following occupation actually is :

Russell you are very close .
I just had to find it on SP after that - it is definitely "ordinary acceptation
of the term" - that bit I found ok to read off the image, but the rest of it is very difficult and I feel sympathy with the Optically Challenged Recognition software.
