In this case he was in the Navy and died in a Royal Naval hospital.
Best wishes

On the SP website, there is a description of the Minor Records (deaths), as given below.

To answer the other question raised above, a Scottish person dying in a hospital outside Scotland could end out amongst the Minor Records.
All the best,

- The Minor Records
The minor records comprise records of births, deaths and marriages of Scottish persons outside Scotland. The following indexes to deaths in the minor records are available on this site:
Air Register (from 1948) includes deaths on British-registered aircraft, where it appears that the deceased was usually resident in Scotland.
Foreign Returns include Consular Returns of deaths of persons of Scottish descent or birth (from 1914), and the Register of Deaths in Foreign Countries, which comprises deaths of Scottish persons (1860 - 1965).
Marine Register (from 1855) includes deaths on British-registered merchant vessels at sea, where it appears that the deceased was usually resident in Scotland.
Service Returns (from 1881) include Army returns of deaths of Scottish persons at military stations abroad.
War Returns include registers of deaths of Scottish soldiers in the South African War (1899-1902); Scottish persons serving as Warrant Officers, Non-Commissioned officers or Men in the Army (not officers) and Petty Officers or Men in the Royal Navy in World War I (1914-1918); Scottish members of the Armed Forces in World War II (1939-1945).
Note: the end date for statutory deaths currently accessible on this site is 1954 therefore minor records beyond this date are not available online.

Ian et al....
The Gods have smiled....
The aforementioned certificate for James 1879 is now winging its way from Scotland..... or it would be if the SP carrier pigeons did not have a compulsory two week stopover between jobs.
So what to do.....
I have a Catherine McColl married to a James McColl. (SP says the only match is 26/07/1850), they begat a John McColl 26/4/1852 (FamilySearch).
And amongst the multitude of Catherine McColls on FS, there was a Catherine Roberts McColl born 18/12/1827, child of Duncan McColl and Catherine Roberts (Duncan and Catherine married 18/12/1826). Somewhere in that line of thought I switched from FamilySearch to WorldConnect. And as usual my line of interest has not been followed up.... she is born but does not die. I have emailed the chap but some of these so-and-so's don't respond. And there I was prepared to risk 5 credits for the pleasure of knowing if it was she who named my John Robert when SP decided it would be much more fun to request another 10 quid for the pleasure of dispatching more carrier pigeons with the marriage record, so I'm off to Ancestry.com to see what snippets I can gleen at a more affordable rate.
Pigeon pie anyone?
