1871 census help! .....

Post by laura140281 » Wed Jun 15, 2005 8:56 pm

Hi I would like to ask if anyone could do a look up on the 1871 census for me, as I am struggling to find information on my Betram family from Edinburgh. The information I have is:

Isabella Bertram born Scotland about 1852.

Isabellas family were wealthy and lived in Edinburgh, to my knowledge they had a servant(s) and a gamekeeper.

The men in the Bertram family were Surgeons and/or musicians.

There could have been a gamekeeper or servant of some kind called John Hooper.

Isabella came to England before 1881 when she was pregnant. She gave birth to a son called John Bertram but there is no father on his birth certificate.

i know there is not much to go on but at present that is all the information I have. I would really appreciate any help.

Many thanks
Laura

Hi Laura,

You can search the 1871 census online yourself at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk . The nearest match that I can see is a 21 year old Isabella Bertram at Cranston, Midlothian. That may be worth your while investigating - no guarantees given.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi there, I've been trying to do a bit of background searching but can't find a likely Isabella Bertram born 5 years either side of 1852 in England in 1881.

The only one I can see is in Northumberland living with a brother who is a Tugboat Skipper pretty far removed from the medical or music professions.

Back up in Edinburger in 1881 there is a 47 year old Music Seller, James Bertram, who had a Isabella born in 1870, so not yours.

Not any of the Midlothian Bertrams could be described as rich except a 30 year old engineer, William Bertram who employed a workforce of 181 men and 47 boys. His parents were George and Eliza Nobel who didn't have an Isabella.

Indeed, rich folk would almost certainly have their children baptised and, if they were rich they were probably either Church of Scotland or English Anglican but there is no likely entry for an Isabella Bertram 5 years either side of 1852. A puzzlement!

In 1891 Scottish born Isabella Bertram is now listed as wife of Tugboat Captain John Steel Bertram, no John 10 or under.

Free BMD only lists two John Bertrams born between 1881 and 1882 both can be found with their families in 1891.

Do you know where Isabella was for the 1881 census.

I think the Isabella that Andrew found was still in Cranston in 1881:

Dwelling: Oxenford Home Farm
Census Place: Cranston, Edinburgh, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0223986 GRO Ref Volume 680 EnumDist 1 Page 13
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Adam HENDERSON M 71 M Hobkirk, Roxburgh, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Shepherd
Isabella HENDERSON M 69 F Newlands, Peeble, Scotland
Rel: Wife
Isabella BERTRAM U 31 F Dundee, Forfar, Scotland
Rel: Niece
Occ: Domestic Servant

This Isabella was almost positively the daughter of Thomas Bertram and Margaret Taskir. Her aunt was her dad's sister.

Not much help but a few to perhaps disregard.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

I did look at the Freecen site,

A mother and daughter pair of Isabellas show up in Haddington in 1851, but they would be too old.

I dob't know if that helps or hinders things

I posted this before I read Andy's reply on "birth cert with no father"
