1861 census lookup please/ possibly Edinburgh

Post by Pamela » Wed Oct 17, 2007 2:38 pm

I am looking for Edward Black and his wife Jane.[nee Alexander] Edward was supposedly a poet. They were born late 1700`s very early 1800`s.
Many thanks. Pamela :D

Hello Pamela,

Not sure if I have the correct Edward.

I did a search of Scotlands people and there is one match of a 30 year old Edward Black living in the same household as a Jane in 1861.

If it's the same person he was living here (from FREECEN) as a 10 year old in 1841-

Piece: SCT1841/685 Place: St Cuthbert's -Midlothian Enumeration District: 04
Civil Parish: St Cuthberts Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 159 Page: 1
Address: John Watson's Public Institut

There is a marriage of an Edward Black to a Jane Alexander in 1854 in Edinburgh.

EDWARD BLACK
Male

Marriages:
Spouse: JANE ALEXANDER
Marriage: 14 JUN 1854 Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

I'm fairly sure they are probably all the same person but obviously he is a lot younger than your Edward Black.

Regards,
Annette M

Hi Annette. Thanks for your help. i think that would be mine as Jane was Jane Alexander, I had guessed he birth year as she was one og about 15 children, the eldest being born in the 1780`s. i dont know where she is in the line. Did she have any children on the census entry? Cheers Pamela :D

Hello Pamela,

You can check if they had any children by looking at the entry on SP. I just did a search for the couple.

I certainly don't see any children for them on the IGI.

Hi there

According to Ancestry, the Edward Black with wife Jane is a surveyor.
there are no children showing with them in either 1861 or 1871.

1861 @ 50A Frederick St, 3rd Flat, Edinburgh St George:

Edward Black, 30, Surveyor, b. Edinburgh, St Cuthberts
Jane Black, 29, Wife, b. Edinburgh, St Cuthberts
Rachel Redpath, 62, Visitor, b. Wamphrey, Dumfriesshire
Agnes Dunbar, 22 Servant

1871

Edward + Jane + a servant.

Regards

Ellen.
