Specific street on census

Post by Shortfuse » Fri Oct 19, 2007 10:38 am

Hello All
I know this question will have been asked before but I can't find anything looking through the postings. In the 1901 census is there any way to search for a certain street ?The wifes G G/F was at the address in Aug 1900 when his daughter was born and in Sept 1902 when another Daughter was born but nothing in the 1901 census. We know he came from Sligo Ireland and I've checked the 1901 census for there with no success.Being fairly new to this its probably me not searching correctly.
regards sf

Hi Shortfuse,

Ancestry allows searching on addresses. Can you give us a few more details? Names? Approximate birth years?

Really weird one! The family is named in Ancestry without a surname! Maybe their "human transcribers" or their OCR software couldn't read it

1901 Scotland Census
Name: Michael
Age: 26
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1875
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Mary
Gender: Male
Where born: Ireland
Registration Number: 646/2
Registration district: Govan
Civil Parish: Govan
County: Lanarkshire
Address: 46 Victoria St
Occupation: Lab (brickloyers)
ED: 22
Page: 26 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 118
Line: 11
Roll: CSSCT1901_327

Ann 6 mo born Govan 1900
Bridget 2 born Govan 1899
Mary 25 born Ireland 1876
Mary 5 born Govan 1896
Michael 26
Michael Gilmartin 19 Boarder
John Herrithy 20 Boarder
Charles Moffat 20 Boarder

Don't discount those boarders. Some of mine were actually family members (siblings, cousins, etc...)!

Mary I can but thank you.I spent a lot of time on SP trying all sorts of different spellings etc and could find zilch.then going through the Sligo census with the same end result.Once again many thanks for getting this info----the wife will be delighted tonight ,at least it will stop her saying "how is it you can never find any of MY FAMILY ?"

You're very welcome.

I have to say I'd be surprised if the image wasn't on SP, though. However, if the name was so difficult for Ancestry to decipher, maybe it is in there, but spelt quite differently.

Some "off the wall" wildcard use might just pick it up

Nothing that I could find on SP,even Michaels death cert has him down as Michael Doulan on SP,its not till you see it you realise that the "u" looks like an "n".Probably not too big a problem for an experienced searcher but hard when learning :(

Well, you learn something new every day

I just searched on SP using one of the lodger's names and found the image---

There IS no surname recorded for the family! I've never seen this before on a census.

Michael & family

Might be of interest....

SP (and GROS?) has Michael & family indexed as SMYTH.
This is the surname of 15yr old boarder Alexander in the previous household...

For once I think the census taker made the mistake, the thought of looking for more Smiths is not something I want to think about
