Help-Missing Mother & Son

Post by trish58 » Thu Nov 22, 2007 3:20 pm

Hi Everyone

Hoping that someone out there can help before I go completly bananas.
:?

I have Martha Rae born 1865 Killbirnie parents Richard Rae & Margaret Johnstone, Martha appears on the 1871 census & 1881 census age 16, then does a disappearing act-she does not appear on any othe census in Scotland or England.
I have searched & checked all marriages on SP 14 in all, none are she, there is no death record either on SP.

On the 1901 Scotland census Austin Rae appears with Grandmother Margaret Rae (widow) my 2x Gr Gran,Austin born in England age 9 scholar.
On Margarets death certificate Austin appears again as witness to her death, states Nephew :!:

I find Austins birth in 1891 Wetherby York knowing he had to be a part of the tree somewhere- send for the certificate, Mother is the elusive Martha no husband or Father is named, Austins middle name is Suddick assuming this is the Father's name. Martha is stated as being a Manageress of Spirit Vaults living in Thorner (Wetherby I guess).

I have checked all SP records for marriage & death for Austin Suddick Rae all to no avail.

I have searched ALL marriage & death records on "Find my Past" for both Martha & Son Austin from 1891-1980, again nothing.
Searched all IGI records-again nothing.
Searched all migration records again nothing.
Searched Commonwealth War Graves for Austin, nothing.

I just don't know where to go from here, I think I have left no stone unturned, obviously they are hiding under one some where :!:

As you see my searching has been pretty extensive-still with no results, can any one PLEASE help find these two missing rellies :)

I will be forever gratefull, and I know there are lots out there who love a challenge, but this one has me stumped.

Thanks
Trish :)

Could he have taken on yet another name if his Mother married on indeed could he dropped the Rae & calling himself Ruddick.
With both names the spelling variants are numerous so lots of wildcards.

If Martha married chances are again that you are looking for that elusive needle in a haystack.

It is sometimes a lucky find or another relative in a Census which gives us clues-does Martha have siblings-have you located them in the Censuses??Any clues as to the lost pair on them??

Hi Trish,

I think I've found Martha on 1891 census.
Ancestry have her as Martha Roe but the original definitely says Martha Rae born Scotland, barmaid age 23.
Shes living in a lodging house in Leeds. Thorner is about halfway between Wetherby and Leeds.
Age is a bit out but it could be her.

Paula
Searching for Barclay Aberdeenshire, Stewart Edinburgh, Brown Edinburgh & Uphall, Finlayson E Lothian, Fairley & Renton E & W Lothian for starters!

Trish,

This may hold the answer:

marriage Mar qtr 1891 Martha Ray Wetherby 9a 171

other names on the page are Regie charles Cullingworth & William Wardle.
So perhaps you can find her under one of these married names and rule her in or out.. Getting the marriage certifcate would show of course definitively whether she's yours.

Regards,
Meg
Main family lines are Harpers from Midlothian, Fife & Kinross-shire, and Dobies/Dobbies from Midlothian. Also Strathearn, Stobie, Layden and Downie.

Hi, Meg Paula Joette

Thank you so much for the help, my use of wildcards didn't show anything like this, but I should have realised that another of the Rae family shows as Roe on the 1901 census in England.

Off to check these tips, see if it is my missing family. Will keep you posted.

Thanks again
Trish :D
