Gorbals 1841 Census

Post by sty » Mon Nov 26, 2007 8:11 pm

Hi

I hope someone can answer my question and help me find the answer that I have spent the last 2 years trying to solve!

My family is the yuill or Zuill family from stirlingshire and in 1870 in the Will of my Allexander £50 was left to an Alexander Yuill of Crown Street, I have now found that a niece of my Allexander was born in a house in Crown St belonging to a brother of the Gorbal's Alexander. I have found the Crown Street family at Wellington Street in 1841.

I think the link may be the previous generation - On the 1841 census for Wellington Street Gorbals Lanarkshire John Yuille is aged 60 and where Born is given as Outside Census County (1841) he died in 1844, so I can't look at the next census.

I have 2 sets of parents given to me by other members of the family,

James Yuill married Margaret McKimmie

Or William Yuill married to Margaret Neilson

Would Outside Census County (1841) mean John Yuill was born in Glasgow or was Gorbals not yet part of Glasgow?

Hope someone can help me on this one.

Thanks

Sheila

Hi Sheila,

Outwith the county should mean beyond Lanarkshire, but within Scotland. I believe that within Glasgow or not, would not be shown by Y or N in that column. The instructions to the enumerator are shown at http://www.talkingscot.com/censuses/census-1841.htm

All the best,

Hi Andrew

Thank you for your very quick reply - Think that rules out William and Margaret Neilson - All their children where born in Glasgow, but you never know!

Thanks again

Sheila

If anyone is trying vainly to find the census record Sheila is talking about on Ancestry.com, they are indexed under the surname Gentle :!:

All the best,
Sarah
