Any ideas would be appreciated

Post by Alien » Fri Dec 07, 2007 6:32 pm

My grandmother Mary Hendry, born 1855 Glasgow, married John R. Orr 1876, died 1924).

I have her death certificate, but not the birth certificate and have been unable to find any information at all about her parents, George Hendry (74th foot) and Elizabeth Gray.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Hi Alien
You don't say if you have already tried to find the 1855 birth? If not it would be worth following that one up as the 1855 records give more details than any subsequent year.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Alien,

There is a John Henry married to an Elizabeth Gray on the IGI.The marriage took place Feb. 6, 1844. I don't know if this is the couple that you are looking for.

Regards
Sheila

Hello Alien,
Have you found her parents on any census records? If so, what places of birth were given? If you give us an idea of what records you have already found, we will know better where to look to help you.
All the best,
Sarah

Hello again,

How about this one:
Mary Gray
Birth: 06 JUN 1856 Calton, Glasgow, Lanark
Mother: Elizabeth Gray

No father listed, so is likely illegitimate. The soldier George Hendry has perhaps moved on... Would that explain why you never heard anything about her parents?

Just a thought.
Regards,
Sarah

Thanks for all your suggestions. This is all the information I have on Mary Hendry.
Marriage certificate in the District of Camlachie, Burgh of Glasgow - 10 Nov 1876 married John Orr. She is 22, parents named as George Hendry, Private 74th foot (deceased) mother Elizabeth Hendry m.s. Gray (deceased). Possible year of birth 1855?

1881 Census
28 Brandon Street, Glasgow
John R Orr Age 27. Born Edinburgh. Fireproof safe maker
Mary Orr Age 26. Born Glasgow.
Wm Orr, son Age 3. Born Glasgow
George H. Orr, Age 2 Born Glasgow
Possible year of birth 1855?

Death certificate - Mary Baillie widow of 1st John Orr, Blacksmith and 2nd William Baillie, Cartor. on 29 April 1924 (age 69) at 50 Crown Avenue, Radnor Park, District of Old Kilpatrick (Clydebank). Her father is George Hendry, soldier (deceased) and mother Elizabeth Hendry m.s. Gray (deceased). Informant is Mary McMillan, daughter.
Possible year of birth 1845?

Evening Times 30 April 1924 -
Orr at 50 Crown Avenue, Clydebank (her son-in-law's residence) on 29th inst. Mary Hendry, wife of the late John Orr, late of Helensburgh and Brandon Street, Glasgow.
Note - the notice is under Orr and not Baillie, her second husband.
I don't know if she lived in Clydebank or was living with her daughter due to poor health at her death.

Many thanks again for all your replies.

Good morning Alien,
Was there an occupation listed for Mary on her marriage cert? Just wondering if it matches this one:

1871
60 Marlborough Street, Glasgow Chalmers, Bridgeton, Lanarkshire
John Murray, 59, Head, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Calico Printer
John Murray, 24, Son, born Newton Mearns, Renfrewshire, Cooper
Thomas Murray, 22, Son, born Newton Mearns, Renfrewshire, Cooper
Rebecca Murray, 20, Daur, born Newton Mearns, Renfrewshire, Power Loom Weaver
Robert Smith, 25, Boarder, born Stirling, Stirlingshire, Foundry Warchouseman
Ann Hendry, 22, Boarder, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Machine Winter
Mary Hendry, 16, boarder, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Earthenware Transferer

Here are a couple of possibilities for George, although his age would need to be off in the first one...

1861
District Second Battalion 17th Regiment of Foot, Camp Shorncliffe, Cheriton, Kent, England
George Hendry, unmarried, 21, born in Scotland

and another in 1871, this time born England:

1871
Back of West Goat Lane, Dalmeny, West Lothian
George Hendry, 35, Head, born England, Private R M
Sarah Hendry, 27, Wife, born England
Sarah I Hendry, 5, Daughter, born England
Margaret I Hendry, 2, Daughter, born England
Mary A Hendry, 6Mo, Daughter, born Queensferry, Linlithgowshire

Those are the only possible soldiers I found. Of course, we don't know when he died... or even if he was indeed dead at her marriage. There is an intriguing one who went to the USA in 1858 and married in Michigan, for example  but not a soldier at that point, so no way to connect him to your George. Likewise another one who went to Pennsylvania.

Well, there are some ideas for you to mull over.
Cheers,
Sarah

There is a death in 1872 of an Elizabeth Gray/Hendry age 56 in Lanark. It might be worth a look even though it does look as though Mary could have been illegitimate as Sarah said.

Are you near Glasgow Alien as I think this would be worth a check at The Mitchell?

Hi again Folks,

Gosh, lots of ideas here for me to follow up. Many thanks for your replies and I'll check them all out. I do live near Glasgow so will go to the Mitchell for another look.

Mary's occupation at her marriage is Cotton Weaver (steam loom), and she's living at Struthers Street, Glasgow.
