1841 Scottish census
My great grandfather was a coalminer, lived in Main street, Gorbals, not shown on the 1841 census, so I have assumed that on the day/night of the census he was at work, is there anywhere I can search for "workplace" recordings., any help would be gratefully received.

I take it you found the rest of the family living there without him.
Kind regards,
Annette

Hello John,
Is this your George's family?

Occupation: Coal Miner
Parish Number: 644/2
Neighbors: View others on page

Elizabeth McLelland 13
George McLelland 15
John McLelland 8
Mary McLelland 20
Nancy McLelland 45
Pattrick McLelland 11
Robert McLelland 17
....and again on 1851 with ages a bit off!
1851 Scotland Census
about George McLelland
Name: George McLelland
Age: 29
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1822
Relationship: Son
Gender: Male
Where born: Ireland
Parish Number: 646
Civil Parish: Govan
Town: Fireworks
County: Lanarkshire
Address: Fireworks White House
Occupation: Coalminer
ED: 6
Page: 31 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 105
Line: 4
Roll: CSSCT1851_167
Household Members: Name Age
Widow McLelland 55
Elizabeth McLelland 18
George McLelland 29
John McLelland 15
Mary McLelland 3
Peter McLelland 17
Jean Scott 13
If this is the correct family then father George should be around somewhere going by young Mary's age of 3 in 1851, but the only George I see around your George's age was a Writer to the Signet....don't think he could go from being a coalminer to a Writer
Maybe someone with better eyes can find him lurking around somewhere
Added later: Young Mary is the granddaughter, so perhaps George was already deceased by 1841.
Regards,
Anne H

Hi Anne
The first family is mine (I hope) that's the one I retrieved from the 1941 census, and everything else follows on, I was just wondering were old George might have been hiding himself on census night, no doubt if I keep trying he will pop up somewhere. I've plenty of info on the family but haven't got round to putting it into chronological order yet.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. Have a Happy Xmas and a very good Hogmanay! (if you celebrate it in sunny Florida)
yours John

I think the second family may be yours too as Anne said.
When I found them in 1841 at FREECEN I also wondered if George senior had died before then.
Have you found him on any census? What was Nancy's maiden name?
Kind regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,
Sorry I don't know Nancy's maiden name.
It appears I have got my "braces in a twist" (as usual), the George I am looking for is my Great-Great Grandfather, the 15yr old George on the census is my Great grandfather, and they were all born in Ireland (I think!). Having trawled the Irish sites I can find no mention of a George McLelland that appears to link to me, and ofcourse the Death Registers on Scotlands People web site don't start until 1855 so I can't find his death on there and the Family Search site doesn't match up with My George and Nancy!!!!
But I will keep trying - never say die.
Thanks John

A George McLellan
Hi all,
There is this Geo: McLellan. [sic]
No more details are given for him.
--
Gorbals Parish Church Burials.
Geo: McLellan (40) Buried 7 Jan 1838. Cause - Dropsy.
--
Can't see any way of proving, or otherwise,
that he is the George McLelland missing from the 1841 census.
Age is perhaps near enough though?
Jack
