Morton/Campbell 1851 .....

Post by Margaret » Thu Jun 23, 2005 7:31 am

First letter to the Census forum, my GG Grandparents John Morton and Christina Campbell where married on the 8 June 1851, in Cathcart, Renfrew. I was wondering which census area I would look up as I am trying to find out where they lived and the family that they had.
Looking forward to any help that is available
Cheers

IGI has one son born to this couple, William, in 1859 in Cathcart.

Since both John and Christina were around Cathcart in 1851 just after the census, the 1851 census is the first to check. No sign of William in Scotland in 1881 or John and Christina.

However in Govan there is a Cathcart John Morton born 1852 with a daughter Christina:

Dwelling: 33 Polmadie St
Census Place: Govan, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203673 GRO Ref Volume 644-11 EnumDist 114 Page 8
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
John MORTON M 29 M Cathcart, Renfrew, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Railway Guard
Agnes MORTON M 26 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Wife
Occ: Railway Guards Wife
John MORTON 6 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son
Janet MORTON 3 F Govan, Renfrew, Scotland
Rel: Daur
Christina MORTON 1 F Govan, Renfrew, Scotland
Rel: Daur

Williams birth cert in 1859 should give the father's occupation, with luck the family were still in Cathcart for the 1861 census with any other children. From there you'll have a good idea of ages so you'll have a better chance of tracking the death certs which should name the parents.

I'm sure some kind soul will have a look at the 1851 and 1861 census for you.

Christina's birth about 1880 would comfirm the parents and give a rough date of marriage and that certificate will name both sets of parents.

Hullo Margaret!

If you do a parent search on
www.familysearch.com
you'll find a son: William Morton b 13 09 1859 in Cathcart.

In the 1841 Census for Cathcart I found two Morton families (with a tendance towards multiple births) which look interesting

William MORTON 20 Carte HD Clarkston Village
Janet 20
Agnes 15
James 15 Carter
John 10
Robert 10
Janet 40 Grocer

and

Robert MORTON 45 Farmer HD Cartside of Dripp
Thomas 20
Janet 15
John 15
Margaret 15
Robert 10
Agnes 10
Lilias 10
Jean 5
Annabelle 4
Christina 3

All the youngsters including the 3 year old are noted as Far Ser.!!!!!

Do any of these names ring bells for you?

All the bestt

Two sets of surviving triplets (maybe) I've never seen the like. But remember after 14 the ages could have been rounded down, the 10 year olds seem right though.

FANTASTIC FIND even if it's not the correct family. (which it probably is)

Quite nearby is a Christina Campbell:

Piece: SCT1841/572 Place: Neilston-Renfrewshire Enumeration District: 3
Civil Parish: Neilston Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 3 Page: 2
Address: Gateside

CAMPBELL - (Mrs) F 40 Renfrewshire
CAMPBELL Norman M 15 Dyer Renfrewshire
CAMPBELL Janet F 13 Cotton Reeler Renfrewshire
CAMPBELL Christina F 9 Cotton Spinstress Renfrewshire
CAMPBELL Ann F 6 Renfrewshire
MCKINNON Agnes F 30 Cotton Spinstress Outside Census County (1841)

The 1851 and 1861 censuses will be more helpful.

I checked the rest of emumeration district 1 in Cathcart and it seem that the enumerator, with only one exception, rounded down all the ages even the ones from 10 - 14. Either that or a good few twins were born in the area!

Hi,
Also my first post since Scotlands People Discussion Group ended. Only just discovered this one.
1851 Census for Cathcart shows 3 John Mortons, 2 aged 25, and one 27.
The references are 459/1/5/3, 459/2/6/13 and 631/2/6/13
Only one Christina Campbell in Cathcart at 459/2/24/10
Hope this helps

Hello susan
Thanks for the 3 John Mortons, looks like the one aged two could be my John. So now it is back to the LDS and library to do some further looking. Also checking out your Morton and Campbell info Andy both look like they could be a match up, heres hoping that it leads me further back. Once again many many thanks to you all, sometimes the brain spins with all these names
posted this as a new topic so re sent it as a reply still learing the correct way to do things..
Cheers
