Having difficulty finding James Moir born Feb 1871 and Catherine born 1872 in 1901
They married in 1893 in Aberdeen. My friend's father was born in 1910 in Renfrewshire.
Names of some of the children were Norman, Gladys, George and John but I haven't a clue when they were born. There was another child Lena (short for ?) died as a baby but I can't find anything on her either.
Searching SP for two names isn't coming up with anything in either area.
Hopefully it's operator error and somebody else will point me in the right direction.
Kind regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,
This is certainly an intriguing family! I have not found what you were looking for
But started at the beginning hoping it would give me clues. I'm sure you already have all this, but it might help others find the right people. It looks as though his parents never married:
JAMES MOIR OR MC INTYRE
Birth: FEB 1871 Saint Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeen
Father: James Moir
Mother: Mary Mc Intyre
1871
13 Pork Lane, Aberdeen St Nicholas
James Moir, 24, Head, born Inverness, Aberdeenshire, Labourer In Iron Works Women (
)
Mary McIntyre, 21, born Insch, Aberdeenshire, Servant (Domestic Floyed)
Ann Moir, 2, Daughter, born Abdn, Aberdeenshire
James Moir, 2 Mo, Son, born Abdn, Aberdeenshire
Here's the sister's birth:
ANN MOIR OR MC INTYRE
Birth: 24 DEC1868 Saint Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeen
Father: Jams Moir
Mother: Mary Mc Intyre
1881
St Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire
Mary Moir, 35, Head, born Aberdeen, Aberdeensh, Fish Dealer
Ann Moir, 12, daughter, born Aberdeen, Aberdeensh, Scholar
James Moir, 9, Son, born Aberdeen, Aberdeensh, Scholar
Jessie, Moir, 6, Daughter, born Aberdeen, Aberdeensh, Scholar
Then the next sister's birth:
JESSIE MOIR MC INTYRE
10 DEC 1873 Saint Nicholas, Aberdeen
Mother: Mary Mc Intyre
No sign of anyone in 1891
And yet, James was supposed to have married Catherine in 1893 in Aberdeen. I see that there is a submitted IGI record for their marriage, giving her name as Catherine Munro. Is this her name according to the marriage cert? Can't find her either in 1891... Are they all hiding under some other name?
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
Well if you can't find them there is no hope for me.
I have their marriage extract in 1893 so they were definitely in Aberdeen then. Catherine was illegitimate and she died in Aberdeen age 104. In 1881 she was living with her mother and husband at the same address as when she married.

You have the right James in 1871 and 1881.
I talked to my friend last night - she is going back to England tomorrow - she said there was 'something about Belfast' but she didn't know what. They have no Irish connections but I wonder if they went there after they married and then returned to Aberdeen later.
I have traced both families back quite a bit (here is James's g grandfather).

My friend was hoping to see how many other siblings her father had apart from the few I mentioned earlier.
Thanks a lot for trying, it looks like this one is going to remain a mystery.
Kind regards,
Annette
I've actually quite enjoyed doing this one especially when I found out that her grandparents moved to Dundee and lived across the road from my husband's g grandparents. I was able to show her a picture of where they lived as my husband's Speed family had a shop next door to them.

Hi Annette,
Do you know what Catherine Munro's father's name was or was it missing on the extract? My grandmother was a Munro and her family was from the Newhills, Old Machar areas. Of course, Munro is like Smith when it comes to names of families.
My great grandfather Malcolm Munro was one of 13 children all of whom survived to adulthood. There were several illegitimate offspring in there though I haven't found one name Catherine yet.

Hi Annette,
I think I have tracked James down in 1891, with his mother (enumerated as Aggie rather than Mary).
Aggie McKenzie, head, 40, widow, Insch
James Moir, son, 20, Aberdeen
Jessie Moir, daughter, 17, Aberdeen
Aggie McKenzie, step-daughter, 13, Aberdeen
The address is 210½ Gallowgate, Aberdeen (St Nicholas). I got the McKenzie surname from taking a peek at the 1893 marriage certificate, where James's mother is listed as Mary McKenzie, previously Moir, ms. McIntyre. I wonder if Aggie, the mother, was the enumerator's mistake and she should be Mary. Well, that's my theory.
All the best,
AndrewP

Her father's name was Thomas Mackay. I have a wee romantic theory that they may have been related as Catherine's grandmother's maiden name was McKay.speleobat2 wrote:Hi Annette,

Crikey poor Mary a widow again - her first 'husband' was 'accidently suffocated' (no RCE) when he was 34 and her second died before his 40th birthday.

Talk about a tangle of coincidences: My 2x great grandmother on my father's side of the family died in 1855 and was buried in Spital/St. Peter's cemetery. In 1882, her lair site was sold to a John McKay! The Munros didn't know the Clerihews at this point. My grandparents didn't meet until 1900 or after, so this has to be just a coincidence--I think!
I'll keep your McKay-Munro lot in mind when I'm looking around.
