Hi Everyone,
I have found James FERANS & family in 1861 at Cot on farm, Chance Lot Farm, Parish of St Cuthberts, Burgh of Edinburgh.
James FERANS head mar 45 Labourer (Nursery) Ireland
Eliza FERANS wife mar 44 .... Ireland
James son un 23 Gardener Journeyman Ireland
Anne dau un 20 General Servant Ireland
I can't find James & his wife Eliza again in 1871 nor can I find their deaths.
James the son will not be there because he was in Australia from 1862
Anne the daughter may have married, haven't found it yet.
I have no evidence that they also emigrated to Australia & don't think they did, but wonder if they emigrated elsewhere.
Searching SP under Edinburgh City for FER* James age 55 returns 5 results, 4 Ferguson's & 1 Ferrier, it's not the right one.
Have also tried Midlothian, West Lothian
All I keep finding is Fergusons so need some suggestions please.
Does anyone know if St Cuthberts became some other district between 1861 & 1871 please?
Regards, Vicki

Hello Vicki,
When I read your post I was thinking the name was likely a misspelling and was going to ask how the name had developed since 1861. I thought I’d check your previous posts and noticed a couple there, not too lengthy, that might be helpful for anyone looking at this mystery. Hope that’s OK.

Hello Alan,
Thanks for the linking, no I don't mind at all... all help is much appreciated.
The surname in Oz is FERN & your quite right it has 'developed' but I do think a lot of the differences would be to do with the interpretation of an accent by a clerk/registrar/minister.
Just a week apart in 1861 James surname was FERANS on the census & then FERANCE on his marriage registration.
I would dearly love to find his parents ancestors...or at least make a little progress like I have with the McIVOR's but so far stuck with nothing other than 1861.
Regards, Vicki
