Re Stenhouse/Stanners family

Post by Lorna B. » Mon Jan 28, 2008 10:14 pm

My new year's resolution was to get as far as I could with my family history and already I am stuck. I hope that someone may be able to help me see my way through the tangle.

On my ancestor, Elizabeth Stenhouse's, marriage and death certificates her parents are given as Margaret Crichton and James Stenhouse - I have not been able to find her birth certificate. On the census returns Elizabeth gives her place of birth as Colinton. I have found the marriage of Margaret Crichton and James Stanners registered in both Carriden and Colinton.

Census returns give Margaret Crichton's place of birth as Colinton, and James Stanners as Carriden. Elizabeth does not show up on the census returns for 1841 or 1851.

The death certificate of Margaret Stenhouse (Crichton) gives her age as 70 when she died in 1858. Her parents are named as Andrew Crichton and Margaret Thomson. Her birth certificate, naming her parents as Andrew Crichton and Margaret Thomson gives her birth date as 4th Dec 1764 and her place of birth as Panbride, Angus. This would make her too old to have had her first child in 1819. The first child of James Stanners and Margaret Crichton was called Margaret Thomson Stanners and was born in Carriden.

The son of Elizabeth Stenhouse, my ancestor, gave his mother's name as Elizabeth Leckie Stenhouse on his two marriage certificates. This led me to the family of Elizabeth Leckie and George Stanners in Carriden. As they had a son, James, born 1787 I thought that maybe I was getting nearer to finding my family line but there is something very wrong and I am more confused than ever. :(

Hello Lorna,

I'm having great difficuly posting a reply but here goes again.

Your family are living at St Cuthberts Edinburgh in 1841. You will find them easily on FREECEN. It shows Margaret Crichton as being born in Midlothian around 1788.

Elizabeth is working away from home.

Regards,
Annette

Thank you, Annette. The 1841 Census you gave me previously. I just don't know how I have repeatedly missed Margaret Crichton's baptism in Colinton. That fits in beautifully with the information that I have.

I will try to get a grip on the family thread again and feel a lot more positive.
