Which one?

Post by crayspond » Sun Feb 24, 2008 1:49 pm

Hello everyone,

I've just spent a few hours on familysearch/and SP doing some research on my gt gt grandmother's family. She was Jane Mitchell married to Thomas Beveridge 06/09/1862 in Bridgeton Glasgow. I was actively looking for info on her parents which on the cert looked like David Mitchell and Mary Nibleck. Anyway after having no luck i looked back at one of Jane and Thomas's son - George Beveridge and lo and behold his middle name is Daniel!!
The David Mitchell is in fact Daniel Mitchell married Mary Nimblock(odd name-if it's correct) in Abbey Renfrew 01/06/1829.
I have done a 1941 census and came up with the following - but i am not sure which one to pay for!!! Can anyone help me

1 1841 MITCHELL DANIEL M 15 GREENOCK NEW OR MIDDLE /RENFREW 564/00 072/00 003
2 1841 MITCHELL DANIEL M 40 PAISLEY HIGH CHURCH /RENFREW 573/00 004/00 003
3 1841 MITCHELL DANIEL M 37 BARONY GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 622/00 098/00 009
4 1841 MITCHELL DANIEL M 1 BARONY GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 622/00 098/00 009
5 1841 MITCHELL DANIEL M 1 INVERESK AND MUSSELBURGH /MIDLOTHIAN 689/00 007/00 011

Thanks
Ailsa

Hi Ailsa,

The Barony two (#3 and #4 above) look to be possible candidates (as found on Ancestry).

Daniel Mitchell 37 Cotton Spinner
Mary Mitchell 35
Cathrine Mitchell 13
Archibald Mitchell 9
Samuel Mitchell 3
Daniel Mitchell 1

Do the other family names look familiar? Does Daniel senior's occupation fit with other information you have? Only the youngest three were born in Lanarkshire, the others elsewhere in Scotland. That's as specific as it gets in the 1841 census.

The Paisley ones seem to be unlikely, as Mary is a child in that household rather than the wife. Daniel, age 15 in Greenock is a boarder with the Jeffrey family, and is a clerk (apprentice?). The Inveresk Daniel is only one year old, son of James and Mary.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew P,

Thanks for looking on ancestry for me. I think you may be right and it is the right family although only Catherine and the Daniel are familiar names. The Jane Mitchell married to Thomas Beveridge was born in 1842 so is not on that census but i may find her on the 1851.

Thanks again,

Ailsa

Odd indeed! You have probably noticed that in the free surname search on SP there are only 12 instances of this name!

Census 1901 2
Old Parish Records Banns & Marriages 1553 - 1854 3
Statutory Register Births 1855 - 2006 2
Statutory Register Marriages 1855 - 1932 3
Statutory Register Deaths 1855 - 2006 2

In fact, a google on the name doesn't come up with much either. Looks like a mis-spelling or mis-transcription somewhere. It might be worthwhile to look at marriage and death records of some of Jane's siblings to get other interpretations of the name

A parent search on the IGI comes up with only one child for this couple:

Catherine Mitchell born 22 MAY 1830 Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, Scotland

She could well be the Catherine that Andrew found in 1841, so it looks like the correct family. I have to say that they are not obvious anywhere in 1851 :(

All the best,
Sarah

This would appear to be them in 1851 (including the Jane of 1842 that you were hoping for) in Calton, Glasgow, after their names had been put through Ancestry's mixing machine.

Daviel Krideliele 47 Cotton Spinner, born Paisley
Mary Krideliele 45, born Paisley
Catherine Krideliele 20 , born Paisley
Archabald Krideliele 18
Samuel Krideliele 12
Jane Krideliele 8
Mary Krideliele 6
Ann Mitchell 4
Elisabeth Mitchell 2

William Baw 21 Nephew
Mary Baw 19 Niece
Andrew Baw 16 Nephew

No sign of young Daniel - had he died young?

All the best,

Andrew

And still in Calton, Glasgow in 1861, but Daniel given as (or at least transcribed as) David.

David Mitchell 56, Cotton Spinner, born Johnstone, Renfrewshire
Mary Mitchell 54, born Johnstone, Renfrewshire
Samuel Mitchell 22, Baker
Jane Mitchell 19, Power Loom Cotton Weaver
Mary Mitchell 17, Power Loom Cotton Weaver

The two youngest children are missing (died young?).

This death certificate must be worth your investing in.
1857, MITCHELL, ANN, NIBLOCK, F, 11, BRIDGETON GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/03 0668

All the best,

AndrewP

Wow, Andrew  That took some sleuthing power to unearth the family with that transcription!
Very cool. Now there is a good chance to find marriage and death records for the surviving siblings of Jane and get another version of the mother's maiden name. Also, Ailsa may find out which, if any, of Jane's siblings went to Massachusetts ahead of her. :D Good news!

Regards,
Sarah

Ancestry allows a search with no surname. After getting nowhere with Daniel, son of Daniel and Mary, I went for Samuel, born Glasgow 1838 ±2 years, mother named Mary. That produced 7 results. The others looked like real surnames and unlikely to be mistranscriptions of Mitchell, so that only left one suspect in the line-up.

All the best,

That is definitely the strong point of Ancestry-- the flexible search. It allows one to find people whose surname you are unsure of, etc. (It also allows one to get beyond their appalling transcription!

Looks like by 1871 Mary-of-the-interesting-surname has died and Daniel is in the poorhouse. Or perhaps he was just ill or insane and she was still living elsewhere?:

1871
Poorhouse, Lunatic Asylum, and Fever Hospital, Springburn, Glasgow. Lanarkshire
Daniel Mitchell, 67, Inmate, born Johnston, Renfrewshire, Cotton Spinner
