census help please

Post by zena » Sun Mar 30, 2008 10:18 am

Hi

I have a marriage cert for Euphemia Mckenzie in 1907 she was 22 so born in 1885 married in Cathcart, her parents are Charles Mckenzie a crofter and Mary Mckenzie. I have tried to find her in the census with no avail, i am hoping if someone could help me to find her with family and where she was born.

Thank you Zena

Hi Zena,
Just some 'off the top of the head' questions to help narrow down the search.
Have you looked on Scotland's People? There are 8 Euphemia M*Kenzies born born between 1883 and 1887. It will cost 1 credit to see if any were born to your Charles and Mary. If you have Mary's maiden name from Euphemia's marriage certificate that should help. Once you have found her birth do another search of that area with only 'M*cKenzie and for another 1 credit you may find her brothers or sisters.
Have you found Charles and Mary in any census? If so in which area were they living?
Perhaps Euphemia was know by another name rather than the full 'Euphemia' in the census. Perhaps someone else can come up with other versions of Euphemia.
Hope some of these ideas can help you in your search.

Hi Rach,

Thank you for your input i am very grateful i have looked on scotlands people but cant narrow it down as i dont know what area she was born i have checked one but wrong parents thats why i was hoping someone could see her in the census to narrow it down. I know the name Euphemia could be Effie as that what she used on her sons birth cert. Her mothers name on Euphemia marriage cert is Mary Mckenzie maiden name Mckenzie.

Once again thank you Rach

Hello Zena,

What was Euphemia's occupation when she married in 1907 and who were the witnesses?

Annette

Hi Zena

I have to admit to having drawn a blank on finding your Effie/Euphemia in the censuses. The only one who comes anywhere close in 1891 is born in South Snizort in 1877 to Charles McKenzie and Mary McDonald. This would mean that not only did she tell a porky about her age but she also got her mother's maiden name wrong.

My only reason for homing in on this one was that Paul, her husband was born in Snizort and I wondered if they knew each other before.

Researching M(a)cKenzie, McCammond, McLachlan, Kerr, Assur, Renton, Redpath, Ferguson, Shedden, Also Oswald, Le/assels/Lascelles, Bonning just for starters

Hi Anne,

Thank you so much for looking for me i found that one on the 1891 census was put of though with the age, i know you shouldnt as ages differ from each census. I think i will have to find her death cert to see if that gives me any help. I did find one in the 1901 census born in Glasgow in 1887 mothers name Mary but no fathers name but could not find them in the 1891 census to discount or prove it could be the one im looking for.

Once again thank you Anne.
