need help here looking for more info on james gifford and isabella charles both born in scotland james in 1847 some other info says 1852 and isabella born 1854. i no james 1st wife was Elizabeth Laing Aitken had 1 son james born about 1870 here where it gets better by 1871 they moved to tyne & wear where he nows has a second wife isabella charles where they have more kids but james wasn't divorced from elizabeth until 1888. and have birth certificate of 1 of there children who was my great great grandfather george born in 1886 where it states that his mother was isabella formely charles can't find marriage certificate of james and isabella anywhere or there deaths have tried the scotlandspeople site, familysearch, there 1837online site as well have them in the 1881 1891 1901 census in england. would like info on any thing to do with both of them if possiable and info on the scottish 1861 census for his and her familys.

The ones that I can see on the online IGI are:

marriage: James Gifford and Elizabeth Aitken 11-Dec-1868 Edinburgh Parish
birth: James Gifford 22-Feb-1870 Edinburgh

An LDS submission on the IGI gives:
Elizabeth Laing Aitken, born 18-Feb-1850 to Robert Gibb Aitken and Jane Thomson.

An extract from the OPRs on the IGI gives:
Elizabeth Aitken, christened 17-Mar-1850 St Cuthberts Parish, Edinburgh,
daughter of Robert Aitken and Jane Thomson.

There is a "suitable" Isabella Charles:
christened 04-Nov-1853 St Cuthberts Parish, Edinburgh,
daughter of George Charles and Mary Wilson.

With only the above information, there is no positive link between the 1868 marriage and the 1850 birth - it is based only on the assumption of the LDS submission as being good (no proof there).

There is no link to that Isabella Charles, but she may be worth investigating further to see if she is the right one.

Hi Giff and welcome

If you look up the marriage of James and Elizabeth on SP you will get their parents names. James Gifford's mother is named as Ann mn Steel. With this info you can then search SP for her death using Gifford and Steel as surnames. There is only one and she lived to a good old age.

Her parents are named on her DC. This info may help you pinpoint the families in the earlier Census records when they become available.

I've no suggestion on identifying the right Isabella Charles. Andrew's guess that she may have originated from Edinburgh is a good place to start.

catrional here is all the info i have on them. andrewp all the info you mention is correct to what i have as well. justjean anne stell info great help thanks didn't have that info. here we go then
james and elizabeth did marry in 1868 both where born in midlothian edinburgh when i got in touch with the archives in edinburgh through e-mail they said on the original marriage certificate on the back said they where divorced in 1888. in 1870 they have a son james but by 1871 they have seperated for what ever reason james moves to durham with isabella (who was born in edinburgh as well) also on the 1881 census james 1st son with elizabeth goes with his father but it gives his birth as 1872 born in edinburgh but i no he is the same child born in 1870. james and isabella have Euphemia charles gifford born 1873 in durham she marries james holmes in dec 1897 , robert born durham in 1880 married cecilia lamb in 1900 on 1901 census.joseph alexander born newcastle 1883 deaf and dumb.then i think they had another 1 called charles born in 1895 in newcastle i think. almost forgot george born in 1886 this 1 i no most about as he is my great grandfather he married jessie mckie sept 1909 had 2 kids i no of george james born newcastle 1916,elsie born 1910 gateshead george james is my grandfather and he married sarah hood in 1936. would like info on isabella and james this has got me stumped thanks to all for the info u gave me
