Hi, I am trying to find my grandfather in the 1891 census but not having much luck and it is getting quite costly, any advice would be very appreciated. This is what I have on him,
Married June 4th 1886 to Annie Hendry in Hutchesontown. He was 21, general labourer. Father James Connolly (dec.) Mother Ellen Connolly (maiden name Kelly).
Annie died South Shamrock Street Glasgow March 18th 1891.
Patrick married Catherine Stewart (my grandmother) in Hutchesontown, 11th November 1898. This time his mother is listed as Ellen Connolly, maiden name McQuade.
I found him in the 1901 census In Hutchesontown with Catherine, her son Charles and their son Patrick.
His death certificate in 1939 ( my father was the informant) lists his mother as Ellen Connolly afterwards Kelly maiden name Mc Quade. The name Connolly is sometimes spelled as Connelly. Patrick is sometimes a general labourer sometimes a bricklayer's labourer. His family came from the Waterford area in Ireland but I don't know when or where he was born. I was hoping to find some information in the census that would help me find his birth but I cannot even find him! I tried to find his mother in 1891 but I looked for Ellen Kelly, maybe I should have tried ELlen McQuade.
I hope this is not too long winded a story and if anyone has any idea on what I should try next I would be very grateful.
Thank you
CathieL

Try searching with spelling variants using only a single "n" and/or a single "l".
Try also CONNORY/CONNERY with single and double "n" and "r".
You can do this using the actual spellings or by using wildcards.
Tyr also "Peter".

Back then, in this type of situation, Peter and Patrick were often used interchangeably, - have a look at the Irish Gaelic spellings of Patrick.CathieL wrote:Thank you Davie
I will try the different spellings, I don't quite understand why I would use Peter, but I will try anyway, I am not going to give up on him!

Hello again David
Thanks for the information about Patrick and Peter, it has not helped me find Patrick but it might be a solve a puzzle I have with the naming of his children. His first son was named Patrick and I thought it should have been James after his father. His second son he called James. Little Patrick died when he was three and about nine years later the third son was born and he was called Peter! Peter was nine when he died and amazingly James (who was my father) lived until he was 92! My father named my only brother James so the naming patterns don't always hold true!
The other thing I just realised is the date of the 1891 census. Patrick's first wife died March 18th, just a couple of weeks before the census so maybe he was off somewhere grieving.
I will keep looking and I thank you for taking the time, from reading other posts it seems you are a very busy man!
