I'm looking for a few pointers please....
I found my family on the 1881 Census at 39 Viliers St, Glasgow Dennistoun/Townhead
Head - James Gallacher Age 40 Born about 1840 in Ireland Occ was Puddler
Wife - Ann Gallacher Age 30 Born about 1851 in Hogganfield
Son - Francis Gallacher Age 8 Born about 1873 in Coatbridge
Dtr - Rose Ann Gallacher age 6 Born about 1875 in Glasgow
Dtr - Mary Gallacher age 4 Born about 1877 in Glasgow
Dtr - Margaret Gallacher age 3 Born about 1878 in Glasgow
Dtr - Susan Gallacher age 7 mths Born about 1880 in Glasgow
Then again in 1891 at 74 Logans Rows, Dalziel Motherwell [misspelt as Gallagher]
Head - James Gallacher Age 55 Born 1836 in Ireland Occ was Coal Miner
Wife - Ann Gallacher Age 44 Born 1847 in Hogganfield
Son - Francis Gallacher Age 18 Born about 1872 in Coatbridge Occ Coal Miner
Dtr - Mary Gallacher age 15 Born 1876 in Glasgow Occ General Servant Domestic
Dtr - Margaret Gallacher age 13 Born 1878 in Glasgow
Dtr - Susan Gallacher age 11 mths Born about 1880 in Glasgow
Son - Joesph Gallacher Age 9 Born 1882 in Dalziel
Dtr - Ellen Gallacher Age 6 Born 1885 in Dalzil
Adopted Daughter - Catherine Sannahan 7 mths born 1890 in Dalziel
Now my puzzle - where did Catherine come from? How do I find out who her parents were or what happened to her?
I can't find James, Ann, Mary, Margaret or Catherine on the 1901 Census anywhere.
I think I've found Francis living with a wife, I know Rose Ann died in 1900 and I think I've found Susan, Joseph and Nellie (Ellen) as live-in servants, but I cannot find the others. I've tried every spelling combination I can think of.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi Lennon and a warm welcome to TalkingScot
I'm assuming you checked for Catherine's BC on SP and didn't come up with anything!
Did you check for the Sannahan name on the 1891 census to see if you can find any others? The reason I ask, is on my g uncle's WW1 record it mentioned he had an adopted daughter. I found her family by checking the last available census, and sure enough, they had been living nearby. Her mother was a widow with several other children, her father was the lodger, and voila...then daughter was adopted by my g uncle and wife. I found out what I needed to know just by checking the census records under her original surname
Don't know if this will help you, but it's worth a shot!
Regards,
Anne H

Anne - I cannot find a birth record for Catherine. I have searched under as many possibilities as I can think of, but nothing. I've looked on the Census for other Sannahan's (and various other spellings), but the only person I've found is a Robert age 30 in 1901.
Annette - I haven't seen that one, will look next time I get more credits (I've used 90 tonight already lol), but I don't think that'll be my Annie Gallacher - although her maiden name was Currie so it does fit. she isn't listed as deceased on 3 marriage certificates for her children or on her husband's death certificate. Though it wouldn't be the first time someone in the family "died" twice (long story!).
Thanks

ps. Perhaps just a coincidence.
Slightly older, but near to the 1891 address is...

Thanks all. You've been really helpful.
Jack - Thank you. I had both those census', but hadn't clicked that Susan, Joe & Nellie were boarding with family. No idea why not when we have Molloy and Reddie's in the extended family.
The entry for Kate Sannaghan is very interesting because her mother is called Catherine.

Catherine Sannahan?
Hi Lennon,
Some guesswork...
Catherine CASSIDY (illeg) b. 14 Sep 1890, 40 Logans Rows, Motherwell (Dalziel Parish)
(Father not named: Mother - Catherine CASSIDY, Domestic servant)
Could she be Catherine SANNAHAN (7mos) in 1891?
And the Kate SANNAGHAN (12yrs) in 1901?
Perhaps "Adopted Daur" was only for want of a better description?
And that wee Catherine was only with the GALLACHERs temporalily?
Perhaps Michael SANNAGHAN actually is her father?
ie. if Catherine Cassidy & Catherine Sannahan are the one & same.
And if they are, then a fair chance that he is...
...why have his surname in 1891 otherwise?
--
Michael SANAGHAN - Birth: 26 APR 1867, Bothwell, Lanark
Parents: Michael SANAGHAN & Catherine GIRVAN
Catherine CASSEDY - Birth: 21 MAY 1868, Cambusnethan, Lanark
Parents: James CASSEDY & Agnes McPIKE
Michael SANNAGHAN, 22, Coalminer, 57 Logans Rows.
Catherine CASSIDY, 21, Bleachfield worker, Logans Rows.
Married 24 Nov 1891, Motherwell.
(both knocked a couple of years of their ages)
--
Michael isn't with his parents at 57 Logans Row in 1891.
Catherine is possibly in Paisley with younger sis Maggie in 1891.

1891 cens 573 Ed 90 p? (Abbey - Paisley)

Maggie CASSIDY, head, 19, Bleachfield worker, b Motherwell, LKS
Catherine CASSIDY, sister, 21, Bleachfield worker, b Motherwell, LKS
--
1901 cens 639 Ed 13 p? (Dalziel - Motherwell)
77 Old Logan Rows.
Michael SANNAGHAN, head, 60, ------------b Ireland
Michael SANNAGHAN, son, 35, Coal miner, b Ireland ...[shd be Bothwell Parish]
Catherine SANNAGHAN, daur-in-law, 33, ---b Holytown ..[shd be Cambusnethan Parish]
Kate SANNAGHAN, gr-daur, 12, Scholar, b Wishaw, LKS
Agnes SANNAGHAN, gr-daur, 9, Scholar, b Kilsyth, STI
Michael SANNAGHAN, gr-son, 7, Scholar, b Kilsyth, STI
James SANNAGHAN, gr-son, 5, -----------b Hamilton, LKS

There may be a family connection somewhere between the
Gallachers and the Sennaghans or Cassidys.
But nothing obvious; so possibly they were just friends & neighbours?

That's amazing - thanks Jack for your help.
I think Annie and James may have been people who often took in children and gave them homes as I've found them on the 1901 census with another girl (a 12-year-old called Mary Ann Gallacher).
I also believe Annie was an unofficial midwife to people in the area (only family hearsay to back that up) so perhaps her helping out people isn't beyond the realms of possibility.
Thanks again
