Where did they go?

Post by crayspond » Fri Jun 27, 2008 3:10 pm

Hi Everybody,
I am back from Dubai for good and now at home in Reading. Just got back to doing some family research again ( you know how addictive it is!).
I am looking at my husband's side for a change and have came to a block so naturally thought of the great minds on this site to help me.
Here goes

James Reynolds married Mary Sweeney on 06/01/1850 in Gorbals Glasgow. Unfortunately for me it was an OPR where it has only one line basically saying James Reynolds and Mary Sweeney both in Gorbals of this parish married by the Rev.

They appear on the 1961 census (he 31 she 30) in Laurieston Glasgow he was born in Ireland (no county mentioned) Clerk in Parcel office - she was born in Lanark. Children mentioned.

In 1871 in the Gorbals again "born Ireland" he is 42 she is 41 he is a railway porter. Children mentioned.

In 1881 Crown St Govan again "born Ireland" he is 53 she is 50 he is a warehouse porter.

Two things
I tried to find them in 1851 a year after they were married and 2 results came up - one in Glasgow making him 24 and after viewing it on SP it wasn't them. The other one is in Shotts with a James age 20 but no wife. The whole family there were born in Ireland - Lamford i think it says. It could be him, maybe he went to Glasgow met Mary then went back to Shotts to work for a while.

I next thought if i find his death cert it will tell me his parents names and if it is the same as the folks on the 1851 census then it is him.
I can't find a death for James Beveridge from 1881 to 1932 with an age or place that fits in.
Sorry if it is a bit long and i hope it makes sense!
Can anyone help please.

Hi Ailsa,

If you have a look at their daughter Elizabeth's birth entry in 1855 it should tell you where in Ireland he was born.

ELIZABETH REYNOLDS

Event(s):
Birth: 12 APR 1855 Tradeston, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Parents:
Father: JAMES REYNOLDS
Mother: MARY SWEENEY

Is the last paragraph just a 'typo' or have you really been looking for a death of James Beveridge instead of Reynolds? :D

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,
It was a typo sorry i meant to say James Reynolds. I have the birth cert of Francis Reynolds (my husband's gt grandfather) born 1857 and no mention of his father's birthplace. Was there a different format then in 1855 ?

Hi Ailsa,

You now know it was Sligo from the 1851 census and yes if you are lucky enough to have an 1855 entry it gives extra information.

In the case of a birth it should tell you the age and place of birth for both parents and how many children they have had.

A look at SPgives you the info in all entries.

Annette

Hi Annette,
Thanks for that - don't know why i couldn't find him in the 1851 census
He must have lived with them after they got married - it says him as son in law but Mary still has her maiden name !!
Very interesting about the 1855 birth certs giving more info.
I'm a bit miffed now as my husband can now trace both sides of his parents to locations in Ireland and i am still struggling with my one irish side.

Thanks again,

Ailsa
