1851 census Aitken

Post by hg » Tue Jul 29, 2008 8:33 pm

Hi,

I have just tried to upload a file. Hope it worked. I have tried before with not much success. Andrew had to do it for me in the end.

Would appreciate suggestions on the place that Mary Aitken was born.

It looks like 'Card' Ireland to me but there is no such place.

Hi Helen
Yup, it looks like Card. This is what the enumerator thought he heard. So now... with this clue, you have to think in an Irish accent and try to work out what was said. It could be a county: Carlow? (seems a possible - you just need to "swallow" the ending) Clare? Cork? Cavan at a push...

Or, of course it could be a Townland - I have a funny feeling there will be loads of those could sound like "Card"...

Of it could even be the name of a farm...

Had they been in Glasgow it woudl be a good to see if they might have applied for Poor Relief. That can be a real help. However, I see they are in Dalmeny. Any sign on any otherr census of the placename?

I don't know that much about Ireland...yet. But see above on the page we see Ireland Moghan. Is this Monaghan? If so we would know that counties tended to be what is listed...although there is a town of the same name. Hmm.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Yes, I thought it might be Cork.

Not sure about applying for poor relief will have to look into that.

I wondered if Mary's death might shed some light!

Might try and find her dod.

many thanks

Helen

I think that is "Ireland, Clare" further up the page, which should allow us to rule that out; he'd surely have recognised Clare if he heard it earlier.
Also "Latrim", which is likley to be Leitrim.

Hi Lesley,

Mary's place of birth in both the 1861 and 1871 census are Ireland.

I have found her dod, this sheds no light but, I now have her parents names, father is John Fairley and mother is Helen O'Donally so, at least I found some more information that I didn't have previously.

thank you

Helen

Hello Helen,

All sorts of Irish Cars here.

Something like CARHA in Co. Donegal would be enough to confuse anyone. How would you say that? (and are there two of them?)

Not even guessing,
