Can you search by Property?

Post by Maitland » Fri Aug 15, 2008 12:08 pm

Hi there,

Does anyone know if it is possible to find out who lived in a property when you don't know who the head of the household was?

Thanks very much!

Hi Maitland
It depends when you are searching for.
e.g. The 1881 census offers an option to search by address.

Other than that you could use Valuation Rolls, to find the head of a household but you would need to go to a library or Archive for these e.g. the Mitchell Library in Glasgow for Lanarkshire, Dunbartonshire & Renfrewshire and other areas too, see:
http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/Residents/ ... lrolls.htm
You would need to go to NAS or the Central Library in Edinburgh (I think) for Midlothian etc.
Some Glasgow ones are available online:
http://www.theglasgowstory.com/valindex.php

Voters Rolls are another source of similar information: again depends on the dates. Visit to a library or Archive again.

Best wishes
Lesley

Edinburgh Central Library (Edinburgh Room) for Edinburgh
Midlothian Local Studies Library, Loanhead for Midlothian outwith Edinburgh.

I think that I am right in saying that some of the valuation rolls may be unavailable at the moment at NAS as they are being digitised so it is better to check first if you are going to Edinburgh.
Names of interest: Perthshire- Taylor, McDonald, McRaw, Gould; Caithness- Cormack, Campbell, Sutherland; Berwickshire- Darling, Johnson, Whitlie, Forrest/Forrester/Foster, Barns/Barnes,Buglass/Bookless; Wilson, Thorburn, Cowe, Laing, Rae, Colven, Collin,

Hi Rach
How interesting...Found it!! - sounds promising.
http://www.nas.gov.uk/about/071203.asp
http://www.nas.gov.uk/guides/valuationRolls.asp

It certainly was the case recently that the sasine registers were not available due to digitisation - now all digitised, and available on the NAS PCs. If they are also doing the VRs that will be a great improvement, cos you can lose the will to live whilst trawling though those if looking for person or property somewhere densely populated like Edinburgh or Glasgow, even if you know the street you are looking for!

Best wishes
