1911 census

Post by rosie » Thu Sep 18, 2008 6:04 pm

Hi everyone

This might sound a bit of a daft question , but why is it that Irelands 1911 census is now available to search and Scotlands isn't :(

Rosie
SEARCHING: CLARK(DUMBARTONSHIRE AND IRELAND )DONNELLY(LANARK) BAIRD( LANARK AND NEWKILPTRICK)COWAN(ANDERSTON AND IRELAND)COOK( ANDERSTON AND CAITHNESS)ANGUS(ANDERSTON AND CAITHNESS) GAULT or GALT( PARTICK AND NEWKILPATRICK)

Hi Rosie
As far as I'm aware it is only Dublin which is available to search so far. The rest is on it's way, but not there yet. (unless I missed something)

I may be wrong, but records which are held in Eire, which is not part of the UK, are therefore not bound by the same condiitons as the UK, so it is possible to release the data earlier. So the very same Irish census data, although available to view in Eire, will not be available at PRONI in NI until 1912 I think, similar to the UK. I think that is the current situation, but I'm sure someone may be able to elucidate further...or put me right!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hello Rosie and Lesley,

The 1901 and 1911 releases are for the whole of Ireland as indicated by this list. It has always seemed to me that the early and free release is a bit of an apology for what is otherwise a mess genealogically speaking. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/a ... plans.html

But the early 1911 release isn’t all that early really compared to England/Wales which is due in 2009. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/1911census/ The Scotland release is a different matter entirely, is subject to different legislation, and has been comprehensively discussed here viewtopic.php?t=12113.

An uninformed comment from one who has found it more convenient to excommunicate his Irish ancestors than to pursue them.

Alan

Yes, that is correct, but I have a funny feeling you can view them in Dublin but not in Belfast.... but with Dublin putting records online, this rather neatly sidesteps the issue.

Best wishes

Given the lack of the survival of the censuses for Ireland in 1891 or earlier, for various reasons, it was decided some years ago by the relevant authorities that the details of the 1911 census for Ireland would be released earlier than would have been the case had the letter of the law according to the relevant UK legislation in relation to the 1911 (and 1901 for that matter!) censuses been observed.

Given the 1920s separation of the 6 Northern Counties of Ulster resulting in the creation of the United Kingdom Province of Northern Ireland, and the creation of the Irish Free State, latterly known as Eire, there are some understandable dispuptions in terms of what records are now available in Dublin and/or Belfast.

In this context, please note that I make no comment or express any preference as regards the previous or resultant situation in what today is known as Northern Ireland, a Province of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Nothern Ireland.

Would someone please tell me the website for the Dublin records?

My MRA left Derry about 1841 and I have not yet found any relatives in Ireland - but I still live in hope.

In line with MB's sensitivity, Derry is what is given as the birthplace of the family.

I wonder if that is what was said by my MRA or just what was written, Derry is shorter than Londonderry, or the scribe may have been biased! I will think on this.

Thanks Lesley. I have added it to favourites.

Also had a quick look at the home page. It is different!

Have still to follow the reference to the lad who forgot he was married when he completed the census form!
