1841 CENSUS

Tried finding John Thomson, his wife Elizabeth born 1817 Paisley, Renf. and their son James bc 1837 in Glasgow/Barony.
John and Elizabeth married 1836 - Barony, Glasgow - when he is mentioned as being from Calton and a "cotton carder".

Cannot find them in 1841 - despite searching - have I missed them somehow?

A couple of questions:
Do you know when John was born?
Have you found them in later censuses?
Do you know that Elizabeth survived until 1841?

The name being so common, we can do with all the hints we can get on this one!

Hi Sarah

Nt sure when John was born but reckopn from 1810 - 1820

Elizabeth died in 1872 - James died in 1885 - not sure about John.

Curiously they don't deem to turn up in 1851 or 61 for that matter - James does appear in 1871 - he's married and living in Glasgow occupation blacksmith journeyman wife Dorothy and several children.

I can't even find this one-- who knows how Ancestry has indexed it!

The only census where I can find James is 1881-- beautifully transcribed and acting as if he'd been there the whole time!

Just to keep me from going crazy, what was their address in 1871?

In 1881 where is James place of birth?

In 1871 they lived in Cowcaddens or Milton area of Glasgow.

I had a look at James's marriage certif for 1863 - his address is Stockwell St Glasgow - which as you know is in Glasgow city centre.

Hi Andy & Sarah,

I see James named one of his children Elizabeth Crawford Thomson. There is a death registred in 1855 of Elizabeth Crawford/Thomson -age is a little bit out but it might be worth a look in case it's James's mother.

She died in hospital; but address is Muirhead Street Glasgow

James was informant and he resided at 12 William Street, Cowcaddens

Hi again,
James place of birth was "Glasgow" in the 1881 census. I still can't find him in 1871-- no idea what they are indexed under. I tried the children's names, etc with only bits and pieces of info... and nothing. Was there no street address given for them?
