1871 census

Post by deano » Mon Oct 06, 2008 9:09 pm

Hello All,

I was wondering if some kind person would look up the 1871. census for Bridgeton, Glasgow, for a Alexander Muir, age 19, Robert Muir, age 17, and a Margaret Muir, age 13.

Its mainly to see if they are together and who they are with, plus place of birth.

Thank you,

Regards,
Jonn.

Hi Jonn,

This is the only household I can find in Bridgeton that has all your people... without any further information, it's hard to know if i have the right one. I have just copied directly the Ancestry transcription...

1871
220 Main St, Bridgeton, Glasgow Calton
Margaret Murr, 60, Head, born Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, House Keeper
Alexander Murr, 19, Son, born Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Wool Dyer
Robert Murr, 17, Son, born Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Wool Dyer
Margaret Murr, 13, Daur, born Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Bobbin Shifter Lab Jute Works
Robert Moore, 19, Lodger, born Ireland, Coal Miner

All the best,
Sarah

Hi John,

Need a bit more info. I can see an Alexander in Bridgeton but not with a Margaret and Robert.

What do you know about them?

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette :D
This is one time when I was glad to use Soundex

In 1861 Mary says she was born in Ireland, if that helps any:

1861
28, 26, & 24, Park St, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire
John Muir, 51, Head, born Stranraer, Wigtonshire, Bootmaker
Mary Muir, 50, Wife, born Ireland
John Muir, 12, Son, born Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Shoemakers Ap
Alexander Muir, 9, Son, born Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scholar
Robert Muir, 7, Son, born Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scholar
Margaret Muir, 3, Daughter, born Kilmarnock, Ayrshire

Cheers,
Sarah

Hello Sarah,

It looks very much like the correct family, the children have correct ages, correct place of birth Kilmarnock, but the mother should have been Catherine Mary, although most of the time she uses Mary, on the earlier census.

Thanks very much for getting this for me.

Regards,
Jonn.
