1861 CENSUS

Post by begbie » Thu Oct 09, 2008 7:51 pm

Looking for a Margaret Ferguson aged 22 in Dunoon for 1861 - her mother was Christina and could be at the same address. Both born Argyll

Any details appreciated thanks

Hi Begbie

I could find only one Margaret Ferguson born in Argyll on the 1861 Census

Margaret Ferguson Born 1838 Craignish, Argyll
Address Kilmartin, Argyll
Occupation-Servant

There are other people by the name of Ferguson on this record but no Christina Ferguson.
Don't know if this will help or not.

Regards
Sheila

Hi Begbie

Will do. Though I am not certain that this is the right family. I have also looked them up on the 1841 and 1851 census.
Is the father Alexander Ferguson? I have found him and mother Christina on the 1861 census.

Sheila

There is also a 22-year-old Margreat Ferguson who is a "visitor" at Tighnabruaich (transcribed as "Tighna Bruasch", but I assume that that is the same), born Kilfinan. No hint of a Dunoon connection, though, and no clues to other family names.

Hi begbie,

Morgamo , I noticed that visitor also.

Here are the ones on the 1861 Census, though this could be another family.
Dond Ferguson 28
Duncan Ferguson 2
Duncan Ferguson 58
Elizabeth Ferguson 24
Margaret Ferguson 4
and of course Margaret Ferguson 23

Hi Sheila and Morgano

Thanks for your help. The father is indeed Alexander Ferguson. who died in 1855.

Margaret's mother was named Christina - but she also had a younger sister also called Christina who was 10 years in 1855 - maybe this might assist in 1861.
Could you post 1851 details Sheila.

thanks again

Hi Begbie

1851 Census Civil Parish Dunoon and Kilmun, Argyll
Address- Clachaig Clyde Mills

Alexander Ferguson 58
Alexander Ferguson 11 Mo
Christina Ferguson 31
Christina Ferguson 6
Henrietta Ferguson 12
Jane Ferguson 9
Margaret Ferguson 16 Born Strathlachlin, Argyleshire

I am including the 1841 Census
1841 Census

Alexr Ferguson 30
Christina Ferguson 20
Harriet Ferguson 1
Margaret Ferguson 4 Born Argyll

I am certain that these to families are the same. It does seem strange that Margaret has gained 12 years in ten. It could be a bad transcription.
