Hi Andrew

Sorry you have looked at the wrong entry. I should have made it clearer. She is Helen Fowler m.s. Smith. The first entry on the register

Hi Jean,

I realised that moments after I replied and removed the reply (I thought it may have gone un-noticed, it was there for less than a minute).

On looking at the right entry, the mother's maiden surname looks like Bey. I've never seen that as a name before and cannot find such a couple on the IGI. I tried Begg (could the certificate say maiden surname Beg?) - no sign of such a couple on the IGI.

Still thinking...

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Jean and Andrew

It sure looks like Bey to me....the y is exactly like the y in the word by on the same record.

The IGI does have a BEY family in Tarland and Migvie, Aberdeen around the time Helen was born. Do you have any idea if Helen was born in Aberdeen.....and could they be connected to her mother?

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean

Helen was born in Coldstone Aberdeen. She died in Ballater. Tarland is about 15 or so miles from Ballater.

Hi

Certainly looks like Bey to me. Have not heard of that name before but there was a famous North East artist called James McBey in the early C20.

Hi All

Thank you so much for all this information.

My husband and I have been pondering over this name for ages. It so looked like Bey, but we couldn't believe it as we had never heard of this name.

Helen Fowler m.s. Smith is my husband's g grandmother. I now have his gg grandparents.

John Smith and Ann Bey's marriage and their children do not show on the IGI.

The Alexander Bey you have found married to Ann Lowrie could well be a brother of Ann Bey.
