Census 1861 Alexander STEVENS, decipher please

Post by vickory » Wed Nov 05, 2008 2:40 pm

Hi Everyone,
I've uploaded a file to the gallery of the 1861 Census for Alexander STEVENS & his family at Kettle/Fife. http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... ?pos=-1692
Problem is I can't decipher it at all & it doesn't seem to have any address.
I also saved the free header but that doesn't have any address either, nice description of the area I think.

Does this mean to have an address I have to buy the previous page/s in the hope of finding one somewhere?

Hoping someone has better eyes than mine
Regards, Vicki
PS.Can SP help when their images are so poor?

Hi Vicki:

That is a very poor copy indeed. You may contact SP and they will send you a better copy.

Someone else will be able to direct you about the address, as I'm not sure of the answer.

Above link to the image does not appear to be working... this should work
http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... ?pos=-1692

I'm seeing
Alexander Stevens head 53 Ag. Lab
Jean/Jane? wife 52
Mary dau 28 unmarried, possibly a H[and] L[oom] Linen weaver?
Mary Ann gr dau 17 scholar
Jane ? gr dau 7 scholar
Isabella gr dau 7 scholar
William [different surname] , a grandson 5

but I'm sure SP can send you a clearer copy as some of it is just guess work!

The address probably is on a previous page OR goven that Kettle is not that large a village even today, it is possible there may be no address other than the village of Kettle.

Best wishes
Lesley

p.s. In Fife, locally, Kings Kettle is referred to as "Kettle", as opposed to Kettlebridge, which is a neighbouring village.

Hi Lesley & Tracey,
Gee you're both too good for me... I struggled to find Alexander, never mind all that other information.

This gives me lots of work to do... I know that Alexander's wife was Ann HALLEY & I know they had daughters
Mary b.c.1831 &
Isabella b.c.1835 -1922

Isabella married Robert BAILLIE in 1858, their children are accounted for & are not these grandchildren.
Perhaps these are children of Mary or other siblings I've yet to find.

Thanks very much to everyone for the help
Regards, Vicki
