Frustration

Post by loz_scotland » Tue Nov 25, 2008 9:26 pm

Have just found information on Ancestry.com and am tearing my hair out with frustration. Only by luck I finally found the family I had been looking for that seemed to have disapeared on the 1861 census. The family name is bowskill/boskill obviously allowing for some variation in spelling but see below !

Hi Laura,

I'm afraid this kind of mistranscription has been something of a "feature" on Ancestry

Very frustrating, I know, but some of their wierd and wonderful interpretations of seemingly obvious words, names and places has caused great hilarity here on TS in the past.

Hi Laura
..and welcome to Talking Scot. :D
Ancestry are well known for their "creative" interpretations.
Blanket Manufacturer??...could be anything, though, knowing Ancestry!!

Only way to know for sure is to view the original census page.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Laura and welcome!
I think Lesley's suggestion of "Blanket manufacturer" just might be correct!
This looks curiously like the same couple in 1871:

15 Jean Street, Paisley High Church, Renfrewshire
Thomas McCaskell, 70, Head, born Paisley, Renfrewshire, Woollen Manufacturer
Jean McCaskell, 61, Wife, born Newinshner, Ayrshire

All the best,
Sarah

Hello All,

Occupation Blank* on Freecen 1841 brings up some Blanket Weavers and a whole lot of Blank Tray Makers etc confined to the Birmingham area and nothing much else except for a Blank Layer in Old Monkland. It seems a Blank Tray Maker made tin trays and they were then sold on to be finished/decorated etc. Sounds industrial and doesn’t seem to fit into this scenario.

Hello Laura,

The David Bowskill, who married Agnes McColl, his parents were Thomas Bowskill, and Lilie Murray, who were married 15/July/1820. Abbey, Paisley.

Is this the same Thomas, and David, you were looking for in the 1861. census that you put on in the earlier post.

The only point is you stated Thomas's, wife was Joan Murray.

Regards,
Jonn.

Hi John,
yes that was an error I should have put Joan Morton she was Thomas's second wife, He married her 29/12/ 1857 . Do you have a connection ?

Hello Laura,

No i am not conected to this family, many years ago i did help someone who was connected to the son David, alas it was that long ago i have lost the contact.

What i do remember was the many variations of the name, and because it was such a rare name when i saw your post it struck my memory.

I dont know exactly what you have on Thomas, and Lilias, but they did move between Paisley, and Ardrossan, Ayr. and they had at least six children.

Thomas, was a Hand Loom Weaver, in most of the census i found him on, the family are in Ardrossan, Ayr, in 1841, and 1851, living in Hamilton Street.

In 1841. on Free-Cen. they are under the surname Bonskill.

Bonskill Thomas, M. 40 years, Hand Loom Weaver, born outside Census County,
Bonskill Lilias, F. 35 years, born outside Census County,
Bonskill Mary, F. 15 years, born outside Census County,
Bonskill Robert, M. 10 years, born outside Census County,
Bonskill Margaret, F. 5 years, born outside Census County,
Bonskill Thomas, M. 5 years, born Ayrshire,
Bonskill Lilias, F. 2 years, born Ayrshire.

In 1851. on Free-Cen, they are under the surname Bowskill,

Bowskill Thomas, Head, M. M. 50 years, Hand Loom Weaver, Born Abbey, Renfrewshire,
Bowskill Lilleas, Wife, M. F. 48 years, Spinster, Born Abbey, Renfrewshire,
Bowskill Lilleas, Daur. U. F. 11 years, Weaver, Born Ardrossan, Ayrshire,
Bowskill David, Son, M. 9 years, Scholar, born Ardrossan, Ayrshire.

I dont have the actual 1861. census, but they are back in Abbey, Paisley. on Sp. they are down as Boskell, well at least Thomas and David, are.

Regards,
Jonn.
