Hugh Finlay/Elizabeth Brown .....
Could some kind soul please help me find where my Great Grandparents lived in Scotland, the only hint I have is Maryport, Cumberland. They were married somewhere around 1870/75 and had a daughter Elizabeth (my grannie) about 1876/77. Thanks for any help.
Cheers

Hello Drew
many thanks for your help, looks like that is the correct Finlay's and yes Elizabeth looks like my Gran. I am off to the library next week, so will look up the LDS discs there. I just wasnt sure where overton was. I have now printed out a map of scotland and marking all my finds on it. Once again thanks for your help

Overton is a small "District" in Greenock, originally the whole area was a fairly large Paper Mill with community housing for the workers. My G-G Grandfather, John Riddell lived and worked there as a joiner for a while. He too had moved from Paisley.
When did the family move to Maryport, Cumberland?

Hello Andy and Alc
Would you beleive the day I put my question I recieved a copy of my Grannies Birth Entry, so sad to say they arent my Finlay's after all. My Gran was born 30/3 1877 at 10 Wemyss Row, Overton and her Dad Hugh was a coal miner. Andy you aksed about moving from Maryport, Hugh and Elizabeth Brown were married in Maryport Cumberland around 1871 (that was the only info that I had) many thanks for trying to help me. Guess it is back to the drawing board and searching some more

Post on LDS
Ther is a posting on the LDS for Hugh Finlay and Elizabeth married in Cumberland with Hugh born Ireland.
There is also a post for Elizabeth born 1877 in Wishaw Lanark. There is an Overton there, which would be likely as Hugh was a miner.
This looks like the family in question 1881 census

The oldest son Thomas's age would be in line with the marriage date you have.
unusual that David Finlay is listed as a relative and not brother would suspect that he was possible Hugh's cousin.
Hope this helps

Oh well, in that case.
Hugh Findlay came from Kilcubbin, Down. He was born about 1846.
He was already married by 1871 (IGI says 1869) but lodging in Workington listed as a Coal Miner. Can't see Elizabeth and Thomas in 1871 in England.
In 1881 the family are back in Scotland:

Hello Andy and Drew
Your are gems, thank you for all this help. Yes this looks like the right Finlay's at last and I never thought to look for them in ireland, always believed that we were scots through and through
Polmadie Street has been mentioned by family so now I know where it fits in. In 2007 I am coming to Scotland so hopefully will be able to see all these places and check out a few cemetries along the way. (that part I havent told my husband)
Thanks again for all your help

Hello Drew and Andy
Not sure where my head was when I replied, think it was just the joy of finding another piece to my puzzle. When I mentioned Polmadie Street I meant Greenfields Row think I will blame old age.
