Which Parish / area - 37 Great Western Road, Glasgow? .....

Post by LesleyB » Mon Jul 18, 2005 12:22 am

Address given on a marriage entry in Edinburgh in 1890:
37, Great Western Road, Glasgow.

Have lost the person in the 1891 census - does anyone know into which Parish that address would fall? Just a hunch that they might have set up home in the same area initially, but by 1897 they are in Bearsden.

Best wishes
Lesley

I'll take a risk and answer this question from Edinburgh. As far as I can make out, the first section of Great Western Road (from the junction with St Georges Road to the bridge over the River Kelvin) was in Kelvin Registration and Enumeration District (number 644/9) from 1874 until 1900. I am assuming that number 37 was in this first section of that long road.

Hopefully one of the more local members can confirm this (or correct me).

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew
Thanks for that. At least that gives me some idea where to look.

Best wishes

Hi Andrew

Number 37 would have been very near to St George's Cross as I lived at number 419 which was just before the Kelvin Bridge heading towards Byres Road on the left hand side so you are right about it being in the first section. I will be going down there sometime this week as my Doctor's surgery is just around the corner from the start of Gt Western Road so I will have a look to see if it is still standing and what it is now.

Cheers

Annette

Hi Annette
That would be great - if its still there it would be very interesting to know what it looked like.

Thanks

Hi Lesley,

Can't see a 37 Gt Western Rd - numbers appear to go 25 - 33 - 43. However the GROS ref for them is,

1891 - 646/3 - ed 28 p 37.
Civil Parish - Govan
Quod Sacra - Hillhead
Registration Dist - Partick
--
If you have a name i'll have a look - 37 may have been meant to be, say, 57?

The information that I found in a book at NRH conflicts with that found by Jack.
  • 1855-1874 644/7 Milton (1-441 Great Western Road)
    1875-1906 644/9 Kelvin (1-441 Great Western Road)
    1907-1934 644/12 Hillhead (1-____ Great Western Road)
    1935-____ 644/9 Kelvingrove (1-441 Great Western Road)
The book was a complete street guide to Glasgow addresses and their Registration Districts compiled voluntarily by Glasgow Registrar staff. The book was published in 1935, hence the 1935 onwards years for the last group. The 1907-1934 addresses were from 1 to way beyond 441 (higher than 2000? - I never noted the number).

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Jack
Many thanks for the offer,
Here are the details, as mentioned on another post:

James McNicol
b.18 Feb 1857 Anderston
married 16 April 1890 to Annie Isabella/Annabella Dick in Edin.
(photo) http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... p?pos=-198
Occupation at time of marriage given as: Property Agent
Address at time of marriage: 37 Great Western Road
& first child born 1897 Bearsden.

I would think it likely that he returned with his bride to Glasgow as they seem to have settled on that side of the country to have children. :? But, right now nothing would surprise me... I have become acquainted with so many James Mcnicols all over the place recently, even one who was married to an Annie. But the "real" James Mcnicol is refusing to stand up!! If you can find him in the 1891 I'll be most impressed!

Best wishes

Andrew
Thanks for the info. It may be worth tracking down the microfilms of the original census pages and searching manually if things continue the way they have been! :? Just no sign on SP...

Hi Andrew,

The Govan number surprised me a wee bit too! The Enumeration District i looked at started from about Otago St.

Will take another look at it - maybe i'm at the "wrong" part of Gt Western Rd, and there is a no.37 somewhere else.
