Re: Rillie 1851 census Lanark
Hi,
I can't see the family in Lanarkshire 1851 or 1861 - even under any similar name.
Do you know of any other children? But if that's James' marriage in Peebles, then maybe that's where the family had moved to?

Hi Jack, thanks for your reply, On James Rillie's marr.cert.it gives his father as George Rillie and his Mothers name as Elizabeth Cochens married in Stobo.
On james's death cert his mother is a Cochrane and George Rillie as Father
On Elizabeth's death cert. She is given as Elizabeth Abbot, widow of
(1) George Rillie, Thatcher
(2) John Abbot, Masons Labourer
and James Cochrane as Father
I do know she remarried to John Abbot
But I just can't find any reference any where to George Rillie's Birth;Marriage or Death. He's just a name
Oh! and on Elizabeths marr.cert.to John Abbot she looks like a Cochens again weird!!

Hi Alex,
Thanks for the info. Where did you get son James' birth as Dec 1846 Lanark?
I see that it's as Lanark on the 1881 census.

What does James say for his birthplace in 1871, and 1891, 1901 (if still living)?
He may have been born Lanark town, but i just i can't see him in the 1851/1861 Lanarkshire censuses.
Have you looked at the Peebleshire censuses for 1851 & 1861 on the off-chance that the family was there?
Only other way i suppose is a wait for Scotlandspeople to put the earlier all Scotland censuses online.

I think this could be Elizabeth in 1881 showing she was born in Ireland.

Well done Annette!
I've now found possibles for Elizabeth & James in 1851 - but no George. And no sign of them in 1861 Lanark....

James REILY 6, b Ireland

So Alex, if this is your James Rillie then being brought up in Lanark may have given him the thought that it was his birthplace - it still may be true, and Ireland is an error!
I'll have a look at this census to see if this Elisabeth is as married or widowed.

Hi Alex,
I don't know what to make of this census - but i give you it anyway. This Elisabeth is as unmarried - was she actually a widow?
It does seem a wee bit unusual that she & George (if still living) don't appear to have had more children.
Very possible of course that this isn't your Elisabeth & James at all.
Still can't see them in 1861 Lanarkshire - so i suppose it will need to be a wait till the earlier Scottish censuses come online.
Or visit your local LDS Family History Centre and order in the 1861 Peebles census film and trawl through it on the off-chance that they were there?

Hi Jack, I seem to be taking up a lot of your time I'm sorry but it is appreciated. So here it is as I have it.
James Rillie born 25 Dec 1846
died 30 Aug 1917 Liberton Edinburgh
He married 26 Oct 1866 Jane Mcbride in Stobo
Jane Mcbride born abt 1846
died 22 Nov 1903 Liberton Edinburgh
The following I got from Scotlands People
James Rillie's father was George Rillie (thatcher)He appears to have married Elizabeth Cochrane. She died 20 Nov 1895 in Cambuslang,on the register she died as Elizabeth Abbot her second husband and widow of George Rillie( a thatcher)
her marriage to John Abbot in 1872 Lanark gives her as Elizabeth Cochens
her father being Stephen Cochens
James Rillie's death register Married First to Jane Mcbride then later to Jane Combe or Alexander gives his mother as Elizabeth Cochrane.
James Rillie's Marriage to Jane Mcbride gives his mother as Elizabeth Cochens.
Jack as someone with a lot more knowledge of this subject and without waisting any more of you time. Can you see where I'm going wrong or is it normal for brides to change their name so often.
Alex

Re Rillie
Hi Alex,
Please don't worry about time, and i'm still very much a novice - only started abt 3yrs ago, so not greatly knowledgeable in our rather addictive hobby.
It's like a cross between a good "whodunnit" (with many red herrings) & a large jigsaw (with extra pieces).
After many early mistakes, i now have a much more open (and sceptical!) mind on what the ancestors said about themselves - and what was written down on their behalf.
--
Can't see you doing anything wrong at all - Rillie is just one of those names that's difficult to pin down because it could be spelled in various ways.
So i wouldn't worry unduly about Cochrane / Cochens - very similar; it could've been written as what the registrar thought he heard or his opinion on the spelling.
Just like Rillie could've been as Riley, Reilly, Reelie etc.
Many folk couldn't read, so no way of knowing what someone else had written.
A wee point - was Elizabeth's father name on her 1872 MC as Stephen, but on her 1895 DC as James?
--
Do you have a marriage date / place for George RILLIE & Elizabeth COCHRANE?
Could you say where you found James' birth as 25 Dec 1846? Can't see it myself - well not as Rillie anyhow.
I take it you haven't found any siblings for James? If no, then this is why i think George died not too long after he was married (but no proof).
--
With Elizabeth getting married in Lanark 1872 you'd think she was always in the area - so it's odd that she can't be found there in 1861.
Would be useful to find Elizabeth to see if she was a widow by then, and always the chance that she was back in Ireland - hope not though.
So as i mentioned before, it looks like a wait for the earlier censuses to come online with Scotlandspeople - though 1871 is available just now.

ps, is this son George as REARLIE? slightly wrong birthplace though, but censuses aren't always exactly correct.
