Patrick McGinn, address in Calton in 1857

Post by LesleyB » Sat Jan 31, 2009 11:23 pm

Hi all
I have a Patrick McGinn on a birth document in 1857. He gives his address as 6 Bell Street, Calton. Thinking he might still be around in 1861, and perhaps at the same address so I could follow him up (I'm not sure where he fits in), I searched on SP but there is not a Patrick McGinn in Calton, but in 1861 the likely looking candidates are:

MCGINN PATRICK age 34 HIGH CHURCH GLASGOW/LANARK 644/02 079/02 006
MCGINN PATRICK age 42 TRADESTON GLASGOW/LANARK 644/09 063/09 020
MCGINN PATRICK age 38 CLYDE GLASGOW/LANARK 644/05 025/05 009

...since the library is shut at this hour (!), if any kind soul has access to Ancestry, could they please see if any of the above Patricks are actually at 6 Bell Street?
I have no age, or place of birth for the chap. (though I'd put money on it being Ireland) The address he gives in 1857 is my only reference point.

Calton is adjacent to Clyde & High Church...but of course he may have moved between '57 and '61.... indeed he may not even be in Glasgow by then  No obvious sign in the 1851 either - my guess would be that he was not in Scotland at that time, but was still in Ireland.

Best wishes
Lesley

p.s. I don't think he is the one who married Susan Frew in 1858 - seemed about right so I downloaded it, but none of the parents names are ringing a bell, and he says he is a "cousin" in 1857, so I'm expecting to see at least something that looks familiar.

Thanks very much for the above Jean. What a bother that he moved from 6 Bell Street... he could be any of the above.

I've jotted it down as a task for the next trip to NRH , so I can sift through all the possibles and find out who the parents of the Patricks are in the hope that at least one of the surnames makes it clear why he stated he was a cousin in 1857.

If only he had stayed put for a few years!!!

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Carol
Thanks - another one to consider, and in Calton too.

Dunno how I missed that one on SP...he is a bit older than I would be expecting, but not impossible as I'm only assuming that being a cousin to a couple who married in 1856 and having their first child in 1857 that he would be about ages with them (i.e. b. abt 1830- ish) , but I could be very wrong on that assumption! There is no reason why he might not be a much older cousin.

It is all his own fault anyway...if he'd not said he was a cousin I'd have left him well alone!! But the temptation to find out where he fits in in the hope of a little more illumination on some of the Irish families is too great!

Best wishes
Lesley

...and who knows what his definition of "cousin" was!

Here's the only other Patrick McGinn of the same age that I saw:

1861 Census

Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Betsy
Gender: Male
Where born: Ireland
Registration Number: 282/2
Registration district: Dundee Second District
Civil Parish: Liff and Benvie
Town: Dundee
County: Angus
Address: Annfield Road
Occupation: Sacking Weaver
ED: 34
Household schedule number: 97
Line: 18
Roll: CSSCT1861_41
Household Members: Name Age

Hi Carol
Although I know you have to keep an open mind, I have my doubts that this Patrick would be in Dundee. Just a feeling...but I suppose anything is possible. And as you say, cousin could be a quick way to describe a wide range of vague relationships!

The small groups of interconnected families I have who came over from Ireland tended to stay in the west.. well, OK, apart from the few who seem to vanish off the face of the earth completely, that is....
