FreeCen - Kirkcudbright

Post by Muriel » Tue Feb 10, 2009 4:08 pm

Does anyone know why Kirkcudbright (both town & parishes in the county) do not feature on FreeCen? At first I thought it might be listed as Stewartry but no, there doesn't seem to be anything. Of course it's possible to look up on SP but it would be nice to have the free access.

Hi Muriel
I wonder if it might be because those records have not been transcribed yet?
http://www.freecen.org.uk/statistics.html
I note that Dunbartonshire for example is listed in 1841 but is not listed for 1851, and there is no Shetland listed for 1841 so I wonder if no work has been done at all on Kirkcudbright?

This page (Last updated on 21 January 2009) suggests that may be the case, along with Shetland...

Best wishes

Hi Lesley

I think that must be the case. Some of the counties are shown with a zero in the number of persons & percentage online columns so maybe this means they have started transcribing. If it's not listed at all then they haven't even started.

Thanks Annette

Useful site for the area. My connections are somewhat tangential - my gggrandfather (& I guess my ggfather & his brothers) worked for a few years at one of the mills in Gatehouse. His 2 youngest children were born there & one of his sons married a local girl so it's quite good to be able to delve into some of the history of the area.
