1861 Peterhead .....

Post by nelmit » Sun Jul 24, 2005 1:21 pm

Hello,

Does anyone have access to the 1861 census for Peterhead, Aberdeen.

I am looking for the Murray family who probably lived at 17 Union Street.

There should be a George b. 1854 with mother Mary b. 1830 and hopefully father George who was a Seaman. There may be a William b. 1857.

I know all about the descendants of George and Mary, my g.g. grandparents, who were married in 1853 and can go back to the mid 1700's with Mary's Davidson family but I know nothing about George. Mary was a widow by the 1871 census but I can't find any death record for George so I can only assume he died at sea.

So if anyone has access to the census and can have a look I'd be very grateful.

Regards,
Annette M

Hi Annette,

An IGI parent search produces the following list for George Murray and Mary Davidson.
  • GEORGE MURRAY - Christening: 28 SEP 1854 Peterhead, Aberdeen, Scotland
WILLIAM MURRAY - Birth: 06 JUN 1857 Peterhead, Aberdeen, Scotland
MARY MURRAY - Birth: 20 MAY 1859 Peterhead, Aberdeen, Scotland
JOHN MURRAY - Birth: 18 MAY 1861 Peterhead, Aberdeen, Scotland
JAMES CLARK MURRAY - Birth: 17 JUN 1866 Peterhead, Aberdeen, Scotland
I take it you have that lot in your research.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hello Andrew,

Yes that's them.
George b. 1854 was my g.grandfather. Mary only lived for 2 weeks and William is not in the 1871 census with the family but I can't find a death for him so he may or may not be on the 1861.
I'm hoping George Senior is at home with his family in 1861.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Annette,

have you looked at Fencen ?

The 1841 census is there for Peterhead , there's a couple of George Murrays that could be yours.

Not much good at the moment but could help in the future.:

Hello Wilma,

Yes I have had a look and I think he is the George Murray age 10 in Peterhead with Sarah and sons.

My reason for this is on my g.grandfather's death entry in 1926 his name is given as George Simpson Murray.
When I put this in to the IGI as an exact spelling up came George Simpson Murray b. 1831 in Peterhead, father's name John. So I think this George is possibly my g.g.granfather.
I then found a marriage between a John Murray and Sarah Taylor in 1830 and I think this is the Sarah on the 1841 census as above. I found her on the 1881 census as a widow in Peterhead Poorhouse where she died in 1887 widow of John Murray, Shipmaster.

But without any proof of age and place of birth from a census regarding George Murray married to Mary Davidson all of the above is total conjecture.

Roll on the early census records on SP!

Thanks for your interest,

Regards,
