I seem to have lost almost an entire family in the 1901 census.
My Great Grandmother Isa Brownlie is the eldest of the family but is found in Cathcart as a domestic servant, the rest of the tribe seem to have vanished!
There should be:
Thomas Brownlie born England - year of birth varies wildly!
Isabella Brownlie born 1862 in Macduff Banff
some daughters, possibly a Magdelene or Margaret and an Agnes
and 1 son, also Thomas, according to his Army records he was born in 1897.
They should be found in Govan possibly Shaw Street or Drive Road.
I've tried wildcards but just can't pin them down, can somebody else spot them?

Could they have gone to New York?WilmaM wrote:I seem to have lost almost an entire family in the 1901 census.

I don't have access to worldwide at home but hopefully somebody who does will have a look at the Isabella Brownlie heading for Buffalo. The girls' names come up too (with a middle initial of M) but it may not be the same family.

Annette

Hi folks,
The one that Annette saw indeed looks like Isabella, but it's in 1927. She is 65, born in MacDuff, Banffshire, and is going to visit her sister Mrs. Magdalene Custer in Hartford, Connecticut.
Isabella has been living in Canada.
Now, what I don't understand about this is that Thomas Jr.s WWI papers say his nearest relative is his step-father John Christie in Bonnybridge, Stirling. So... why isn't Isabella's surname Christie? Or are we getting into the murky depths of family secrets here...
Regards,
Sarah

Thanks for that.
I see a Canadian trip too - I can only access worldwide at my library or I'd look myself.
There are also return trips to Glasgow with the mother's and children's names (but maybe they are a different family). I wondered if they had gone to NY and returned before 1906 when Eleanor was born.

Annette

Mine was in the Gordon Highlanders 3/6404, and the next of Kin on his records is Thomas Brownlie 10 Shaw St Govan
And his Mother filled in the form after his death detailing parents and 2 sisters still at home Margaret & Eleanor.

Whew! That's a relief
Re: passenger lists
The only one that looks like it could be Isabella is the returning one arriving 27 May 1928 in Glasgow from Montreal. She is heading for 22 Drumoyne Quad, Glasgow, and the country of her last permanent residence was Canada. So it seems she visited her sister in Connecticut before heading back to Scotland for good.
She only came, however, in 1926, when she is found headed for the home of her daughter Mrs Lena Paterson, 88 Birch Street, Timmins, Ontario. She says she has never been in Canada before, so that 's that.
Cheers,
Sarah

That's her Sarah!
One of the girls went to live in Timmons and 'the Quad' was a family home, Thomas [sen] died in 1921 so she would have had time and money to go by then [if family lore is to be believed].
I've checked an old census and Isabella did have a sister Magdalene so that ties in.
I'll answer your PM now.
