Where are my Murrays?

Post by alimail » Wed Mar 25, 2009 2:21 pm

I am trying to find some Census entries for Ann Murray, born Maryhill, Glasgow, June 1875. Her parents are Christie and Catherine, nee Devine, who were married in Maryhill in May 1874, aged 30 (or 20) and 22. Address on the marriage cert and Ann's birth cert both Whitelaw Street.
I've searched 1881 to 1901 and can't find any evidence of the family at all.
Would be grateful if anyone could help or suggest what to do!
Ali

There's this in 1881

Ann Murray b abt 1876 Maryhill, Lanarkshire
Daughter of Christopher and Catherine (both born Ireland)
living at Wes Dublin Mackenzie St
Greenock East Renfrewshire

Christopher is a dock labourer. Theres also a son, James aged 2.

If this is them, I'll look in '91 if you like.

Hi Ali,
They're in Greenock in 1881, and were there at least from 1879 when wee James was born.

Wes Dublin Mackenzie St, Greenock East, Renfrewshire
Christopher Murray, 30, Head, born Ireland, Dock Labourer
Catherine Murray, 30, Wife, born Ireland
Ann Murray, 5, born Maryhill, Lanarkshire
James Murray, 2, born Greenock, Renfrewshire

Were you only searching Lanarkshire?

All the best,
Sarah

On the other hand... I'm glad you were the one who offered to look in 1891, because I can't find them! :-

Is the ironing starting to look like a better choice?

Regards,
Sarah

Ladies, how can I thank you? I didn't search Greenock, so had no hope of finding them at all.
And to work out that they'd moved to Salford..genius!
I suspected they were Irish born, that's confirmed it all now.
Many thanks - back to the ironing now, girls!
